Funding from the U.S. Department of Labor will help build on Iowa’s efforts to increase our number of skilled workers.

Iowa Workforce Development has been awarded a $200,000 ApprenticeshipUSA State Accelerator Grant to help us do more with our apprenticeship programs. The funding will help Iowa expand apprenticeships in a variety of industries, including advanced manufacturing, health care, IT, construction and transportation.

The fact that Iowa has tripled state funds to support apprenticeships helped us qualify for the federal money. In 2014, the Legislature established the Iowa Apprenticeship Act to grow the number of registered apprentices with training grants for eligible programs. Iowa is one of 14 states that have increased apprentices by more than 20 percent.

Apprenticeships are a proven path to high-quality, good-paying jobs. Apprenticeships train employees in a variety of occupations that require a wide range of skills and knowledge. Workers can earn while taking part in structured learning and on-the-job training. Upon completion of an apprenticeship program, participants receive an industry issued, nationally recognized credential that certifies occupational proficiency.

Apprenticeships prepare Iowans for good jobs and provide employers with the skilled workers they need—but the benefits to our economy don’t stop there. For every dollar spent on apprenticeships, employers receive an average of $1.47 return in increased productivity and innovation.
