DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate releases new data showing that Iowa has more active registered voters than before any June primary in Iowa history. There are currently 1,964,522 active registered voters in the state. The previous high leading into a June primary election was 1,956,723 in 2010.
“It has never been easier to register to vote in Iowa,” Secretary Pate said. “When I returned to this office in 2015, I immediately focused on reforms like online voter registration and the Safe at Home address confidentiality program. Almost 100,000 Iowans have registered online and nearly 500 survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault are now able to register to vote without the fear of their information becoming public record. These numbers show the reforms we instituted are working well.”
The all-time high for active registered voters was also reached during Secretary Pate’s current tenure. That mark was 2,045,864 in January 2017.
Secretary Pate reminds voters who want to participate in Tuesday’s June 5 primary but are not registered to vote can register and vote at the polls on Election Day. If you are registering to vote on Election Day you will need to bring a photo ID and proof of residency, such as a lease or utility bill. That process has not changed from previous elections.
“Thanks to a bill I authored, and Governor Reynolds signed into law a few weeks ago, you can now use an electronic document for proof of residency, such as an email attachment on your phone, if you’re registering to vote on Election Day,” Secretary Pate said. “It’s easy to vote, but hard to cheat in Iowa.”
