Iowans vote today in primary elections

Iowans head to the polls today to cap off the primary elections ahead of the November main election

DES MOINES – Iowans vote today in primary elections across the state.

These elections sort out which candidates will represent Democrats and Republicans in the main elections held this coming November.

A local race of interest is in Cerro Gordo county, where Republican incumbents on the board of supervisors Chris Watts and Tim Latham both are running for re-election in the new first district. By all accounts, both have served the county well, but only one will proceed forward. In the new district 3, Mayor Pro Tem of Mason City and at-large councilman Paul Adams is running as a Democrat versus Lori Meacham Ginapp. An Adams win in November would shake up the board and the city council. Also in district 3, Republicans Don O’Connor and Travis D. Pike are squaring off.

Statewide, the Democratic U.S. Senate primary has been hotly contested. Former U.S. rep Abby Finkenauer faces Michael Franken and Glenn Hurst for the likely opportunity to face off against Charles Grassley, who’s been in elected office since the middle of the last century. His approval rating is low and the Democrats think he’s finally beatable. In red Iowa, this could be far-fetched.

Polls close at 8 PM. If in doubt on your polling place, head to your local courthouse.
