Harkin Welcomes Nomination of MCHS Graduate Stephanie Rose for U.S. District Judge

American Bar Association gives her highest possible ranking –

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today issued the following statement upon learning that the White House had formally nominated Stephanie Rose as U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Iowa.  Ms. Rose, who currently serves as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa, was one of three candidates nominated by Harkin to replace Judge Robert Pratt when he takes senior status.  Her nomination will now be sent to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will need to approve it before being considered by the full Senate.   She is the first woman to be nominated for a judgeship in Iowa’s Southern District.

“Stephanie Rose is a superb attorney and among jurists, prosecutors and the defense bar has a reputation as an extremely fair and ethical prosecutor who possesses great legal ability, intellect, and judgment.  Since her confirmation as U.S. Attorney, she has vigorously enforced federal law, helping to make our state safer, and exhibited a strong sense of justice,” said Harkin.  “There is no question in my mind that Stephanie Rose would be an outstanding federal judge and if confirmed, her appointment would be an historic achievement for the State of Iowa.  I congratulate Stephanie Rose on this nomination and I urge my Senate colleagues to confirm her for this important position as quickly as possible.”

As a result of her work, Ms. Rose earned a perfect ranking of well-qualified from The American Bar Association, which evaluates all federal court nominees.

Before serving as United States Attorney, Ms. Rose had been a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Northern District of Iowa for 12 years, where she has served as Deputy Criminal Chief since 2003.  She has been the lead prosecutor on more than 260 criminal felony cases and has argued before the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals 34 times.  She received a national award from the Department of Justice for her work in prosecuting the largest unlawful Internet pharmacy case in the U.S.  Ms. Rose obtained her B.A. with honors from The University of Iowa and her J.D. with distinction, Order of the Coif, from The University of Iowa College of Law.

Ms. Rose was the first woman to be confirmed as U.S. Attorney from Iowa’s Northern District.  The Senate confirmed her unanimously for that position in November 2009.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate as U.S. District Judge for the Southern District, she would also be the first woman to hold this position.

Rose is a 1991 graduate of Mason City High School.
