ALBIA — An Iowa man has been arrested after police say a hidden camera was discovered inside an Albia hair salon in an area that included a tanning bed.
The Albia Police Department announced Friday that an officer responded on the evening of June 19, 2026, after a hidden camera was found inside Just Teasin’ Hair Salon in Albia, Iowa.
According to police, the camera was disguised as an electrical outlet. Authorities said the device was positioned to record a portion of the salon that included a tanning bed.
Police emphasized that the area where the camera was found was intended for personal use and was not part of the salon’s regular daily business operations.
“The violation of trust and privacy that has resulted from the discovery of the camera is unsettling and unacceptable in our community,” Albia Police Chief Nathan Pritchard said in the announcement.
The Albia Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continued the investigation and identified 49-year-old Kevin Zaputil of Albia as the person accused of placing the camera.
Police said Zaputil has been charged, arrested and has since bonded out of the Monroe County Jail.
Authorities said the investigation has focused on identifying people directly affected by the camera’s placement and determining whether any other hidden cameras existed. Police said services are being provided to those directly impacted.
No additional cameras have been found or reported to law enforcement, according to the police announcement.
Albia police and DCI said they remain committed to investigating the discovery of any additional hidden devices or recordings. Authorities encouraged anyone concerned that an unauthorized recording device may have been placed without their knowledge or permission to check their own property or contact someone they trust to assist with a check.
Anyone who discovers an unauthorized device or recording is asked to report it immediately to the Albia Police Department at 641-932-7815.
A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and Zaputil is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
