Iowa’s six-week abortion ban temporarily put on hold

DES MOINES – Iowa’s six-week abortion ban has been temporarily put on hold after a judge signed an injunction.

The Iowa Legislature and Governor Kim Reynolds signed the “Heartbeat Bill” in May, placing severe restrictions on abortions in Iowa; some call the law the toughest in the country. A fetus with a heartbeat cannot be aborted; doctors would face serious charges for the procedure.

A lawsuit was filed in May to halt the law. It was brought by the ACLU of Iowa and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America as co-counsel on behalf of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and Dr. Jill Meadows. The Emma Goldman Clinic of Iowa City is also a co-plaintiff in the case, the Iowa ACLA said.

This week, the ACLU of Iowa announced an “Important win for Iowa women,” saying “Iowa’s six-week abortion ban temporarily put on hold” after a judge signed an injunction to temporarily halt the law which would have gone into effect July 1. The injunction will likely hold until the matter is officially settled in court. Some say the law won’t hold up and will be struck down.

“Along with Planned Parenthood and the Emma Goldman Clinic, we’ll keep fighting this disastrous law to get it struck down permanently and completely,” the Iowa ACLU said.
