WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators in the United States Congress are calling for investigations into President Donald Trump’s ties and dealings with Russia in the weeks and months since his election in November up to the resignation of his national security advisor.
President Donald Trump’s national security advisor quit as rumors swirl of ties to Russia. General Michael Flynn resigned Monday, according to the White House, amid calls for the President to fire him. Allegedly, Flynn withheld information or possibly mislead Vice President Mike Pence in a briefing about a November phone call Flynn made to a Russian ambassador. Others question whether the President himself or others close to him could be blackmailed by Russia and are therefore corroborating with the giant nation known for mischievous deeds, roque behavior and participating in a Cold War with Western powers that lasted for decades.
New Jersey Senator Cory Booker called for investigations today, saying:
“General Flynn’s resignation raises many more questions than it answers about the Administration’s communications with Russia and the President’s knowledge of Flynn’s potentially criminal actions. These questions are in addition to the many questions that remain unanswered about Russia’s efforts to attack our democracy by influencing the outcome of the November election.
“Congressional Republicans’ silence in response to these developments is deafening, and suggests they will simply accept whatever explanation the Trump White House provides. Thus far, Congressional Republicans have slow-walked any transparent investigation to these issues and have been happy to have these deliberations behind closed doors where the American people are not able to engage in the open discussion that our democracy deserves. To find answers, we need open and transparent Congressional investigations into these matters and further hearings on Russia’s ties to the White House, Russia’s attack on our election system, and Russian efforts to undermine our closest allies in Europe.”
Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also released a statement following the resignation of Flynn:
“The truth and consequences of the Russia connection: the American people deserve to know the full extent of Russia’s financial, personal and political grip on President Trump and what that means for our national security.
“Flynn’s resignation is a reflection of the poor judgment of President Trump and demands answers to the grave questions over the President’s involvement. By what authority did Flynn act and to whom did he report?
“The FBI must accelerate its investigation of the Russian connection with the Trump Administration, and Congress must call for a bipartisan, independent, outside commission to fully investigate Russia’s influence on the Administration and the election.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said “Congress must pull its head out of the sand and launch a real, bipartisan, transparent inquiry into Russia. Our national security is at stake. When did (Trump) know that Flynn lied? What other contacts with Russia occurred during the campaign? Who knew what? Who approved what? This. Is. Not. Normal. Trump owes Americans a full account of his Admin’s dealings with Russia, both before & after the election.”
New York Senator Chuck Schumer said Tuesday that “General Flynn’s resignation is not the end of the story. It is merely the beginning.”
Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump fumed, “The fake news media is going crazy with their conspiracy theories and blind hatred. @MSNBC & @CNN are unwatchable. @foxandfriends is great!”
Congress has yet to act on the calls for an investigation and is not likely to, due to Republican control.
