MASON CITY – The City of Mason City is looking to hand half of the local taxes collected from the allegedly soon-to-be-built downtown hotel to a “non-profit” to run the Music Man Square across the street.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MASON CITY IN THE STATE OF IOWA, ON THE MATTER OF THE PROPOSAL TO ENTER INTO A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH MASON CITY FOUNDATION, AND THE HEARING THEREON

Hotel rendering via Hyatt – allegedly to be built in Southbridge Mall parking lot.  Taxes collected here will go to Mason City Foundation to run the Music Man Square, across the street.

PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that the Council of the City of Mason City in the State of Iowa, will hold a public hearing on February 1, 2022, at 7:00 P.M. in the Mason City Room of the Mason City Public Library, 225 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa, at which meeting the Council proposes to take action on the proposal to enter into a Grant Agreement (the “Agreement”) with Mason City Foundation (the “Foundation”).

The Agreement would obligate the Foundation to continue to operate and maintain the Music Man Square building facility, which is a recreational, cultural, and entertainment facility that promotes tourism and convention business in the City.

In furtherance of the Foundation’s continued operation of the Music Man Square building facility, the Agreement proposes that the City will make up to eighty (80) quarterly payments of Grants to the Foundation, funded through the locally imposed hotel/motel tax generated by hotel operations on the Hotel Property and actually collected by the City under Iowa Chapter 423A (not including any state-imposed hotel/motel tax) (the “Local Hotel Tax”). Each Grant would consist of 50% of the Local Hotel Tax collected by the City from the State during the preceding quarter, under the terms and following satisfaction of the conditions set forth in the Agreement.

At the above meeting the Council shall receive oral or written objections from any resident or property owner of said City, to the proposal to enter into the Agreement with the Foundation. I wonder who gets more visitors. The Frank Lloyd Wright Architectural Interpretive Center (AIC)? Or Music Man Square. I got to think its the AIC. Which is interesting because its not even really downtown. Visitors have to go find it. And when its open, they do. Its in the heart of the neighborhood that visitors can walk up and down the street and enjoy the all the great sites. But with Music Man Square. It maybe downtown, but its pretty much closed, (while collecting COVID cash) and really, unless it belonged to Tommy Dorsey or Glenn Miller,if you seen one trombone, haven’t you seen them all?

Ridiculous… But you know the old saying:
“Ya’ can’t fight City Hall”.

Send the bill to Carl Miller….His ghost is still haunting Mason City…” Miller’s Folly” is not limited to the 12th Street
Overpass.

And, far too many people involved, with no concept of how Not-For-Profit Organizations
are run.

The City needs to worry more about Southbridge Mall.. If they really have money to give away…do something that will really make a difference.
Have the Property Taxes been paid in full to date ? It is not attracting new retail, or Other small businesses.
A set portion of the Mall revenues are by contract, to be used to maintain the
Hockey/Multipurpose Arena. There could not possibly be enough business being generated to make a dent in the Arena revenues..

And, the old ” No Transparency” under the Bookmeyer regime is back !!!
So we will never really know what is going on with these Projects…

What a load of crap. When the music man square was built council said it wasn’t going to cost the taxpayer’s a dime. Now because of mismanagement or lack of anybody who care about it we have to subsidies it no way hopefully this city council will be a stop to this hand out. Call your council members and let them know your thoughts.

Too late…done deal..

She doesn’t play well with others. Tends to run off good, smart, caring, people and replaces them with folks who doesn’t make her feel threatened.

Like Bidens’ Build Back Better plan.

What Hotel? No hotel, no tax, no sweat. This debleat scam man can’t get financing. Mason City had a 7 year head start on Clear Lake, their Hotel is open. The only construction done to date was a pile of concrete in front of the Music Man Square for a skywalk to nowhere. This whole thing shows a lack of common sense and intelligence. The stooges running this city are pitiful.

why doesn’t somebody give us a update on how much money our cant lose arena is loosing?
John Lee said it will make lots, 6.00 beers, full seats, busy every night.
Would love a update on what that project is costing us

$6.00 beers

I’ll stay home and drink.

$6.00 beers…I’ll stay home and snort cocaine.

maybe if your sh1t website actually worked I wouldn’t have to post never knowing if it got filtered or your just a carp programmer!

someone get a chain and pull down racist meredith “the man from the klan” wilson statue.

and impeach that racist Biden from his past comments.

They canceled the name mohawk because it was deemed offensive. Is the music man next. Which means the statue has to come down. Among other changes. Maybe call it the president square. As for the sport teams maybe call them the thunderbirds. Or maybe the gamecocks. Or the red dogs. Easy to cheer to names. Go t-birds, dogs, etc. Time will tell. Anything but the name mason city unicorns. Do the right thing here. Take down statue and give the sports teams a traditional positive name. Go T-Birds!!!!

Liberals killing America continues…

Mason City Tromboners! It’s the only name that makes sense. Everything else is offensive!

Does “on file for public inspection” mean you could take a picture of it and post on NIT or elsewhere?

Seems like money well spent, since the only use for that place is wedding menus. Another fine decision by the outstanding people attempting to run Mason city.
