NIACC Student Body Sponsors Coat Drive

MASON CITY – North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Student Senate members are excited to sponsor the annual coat drive, which helps provide coats for people in need. The coat drive is a student-driven community service project with a long history at NIACC.

“It is a great way to give back to the community and work towards everyone staying warm,” said Abbey Hall, NIACC Student Senate Information Officer.

The Coat Drive will run from Monday, December 3 through Friday, December 7.

Donations of clean gently used or new winter outerwear can be placed in collection boxes on the NIACC campus. Collection boxes will be located throughout campus from Monday, December 3 through Friday, December 7.

To symbolize the need for winter clothing, NIACC Student Senators will stand outside without winter coats during the Coatless in the Cold event from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5 at Hy-Vee East, Fareway and Hy-Vee West.  Outerwear and monetary donations will also be accepted during this time.

“The coat drive has continued to grow for Student Senate. We appreciate the community support for this event and hope to have an even bigger response this year,” said Hall.

Last year 163 coats, 20 scarves, 34 mittens/gloves, 37 hats and $133.29 were collected and donated to Northern Lights Alliance Homeless Shelters.  All outerwear and donations collected this year will be distributed to North Iowa Community Action Organization.
