HOUSTON, TEXAS — Iowa State Cyclone soccer carried a one-goal lead into halftime Thursday night, but Houston struck twice in less than five minutes after the break to hand the Cyclones a 2-1 loss in their first Big 12 road match.
The September 24 defeat dropped Iowa State to 4-4-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Houston improved to 6-1-3 and remained unbeaten in the Big 12 at 2-0.
Lucy Froitzheim gave the Cyclones an early advantage, redirecting a header into the net at the 17:54 mark for her first goal of the season and second of her career. Erin Hopewell and Sophie Forrester provided the assists.
Iowa State protected that lead through halftime, but Houston took control over the final 45 minutes, outshooting the Cyclones 17-2 in the second half.
Laney Gonzales delivered the equalizer at 67:57, scoring on a corner kick that slipped past an attempted clearance at the near post.
Just 4 minutes, 57 seconds later, Bailey Cate beat Iowa State goalkeeper Eme McClenahan for the go-ahead goal. Gonzales assisted on the play, finishing with a goal and an assist.
The Cyclones could not muster a late response, going without a shot over the final 18 minutes.
“We had a 15-minute spell in the second half where we invited pressure by being too passive,” Iowa State coach Matt Fannon said. “That and a couple of really puzzling decisions are the difference in these tight games.”
McClenahan finished with seven saves as Houston piled up a 21-5 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The Cougars also led 5-2 in corner kicks.
Froitzheim and Morgan Goodman each attempted two shots to lead Iowa State. Hopewell’s assist was her second of the season, while Forrester collected her first.
Cate and Ava Shannon each recorded four shots for Houston. Cougars goalkeeper Sierra McCluer needed one save to secure the victory.
The loss followed Iowa State’s 1-0 setback against No. 15 Colorado in the Big 12 opener, leaving the Cyclones searching for their first conference victory.
Another ranked opponent awaits Sunday, September 27, when Iowa State hosts No. 10 West Virginia at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames. Kickoff is set for noon, with the match streaming on ESPN+.
