ANKENY — A suburban Iowa home sustained extensive damage early Tuesday after a fire broke out in the garage while the homeowners were inside, fire officials said.

The Ankeny Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2026, to a residential structure fire in the 900 block of NE 34th Street, near Briarwood Golf Course.

Fire officials said the homeowners were home at the time and called 911 after discovering the fire.

Ankeny firefighters arrived within minutes and found heavy fire coming from the garage. Crews immediately began attacking the flames with an apparatus-mounted nozzle before transitioning to several handlines.

Because of the extent of the fire, a second alarm was called, bringing additional crews to the scene.

The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes. No injuries were reported, but the home sustained extensive damage.

Fire officials said the incident also showed the importance of keeping doors closed inside a home, especially while sleeping.

The Ankeny Fire Department reminded residents to “close the door before you doze,” noting that a closed door between the garage and the home helped keep most of the fire damage contained to the garage area.

Officials said closed doors can slow the spread of fire and smoke, giving residents more time to escape safely. If fire or smoke conditions make hallways unsafe, residents may need to exit through a window.

The Ankeny Fire Department was assisted by the Ankeny Police Department, Bondurant Fire Department, Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire District, MidAmerican Energy, Polk City Fire Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No additional information was immediately released.
