IOWA CITY — A mid-day lightning strike is being blamed for a massive structure fire that tore through an Iowa City housing complex on Wednesday, leaving two dozen residents displaced and causing an estimated half-million dollars in damage.

The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched at 12:35 p.m. on June 10, 2026, to a 12-unit residential building located at 322 N. Van Buren St. Initial emergency reports warned of thick smoke pouring from the roofline of the complex.

Fire crews arrived on the scene just three minutes after the initial dispatch, encountering heavy smoke billowing from the building’s eaves and active flames breaking through a roof vent. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, bringing the blaze under control approximately 50 minutes after arrival.

Despite the intensity of the smoke and flames, officials confirmed there were no injuries reported among civilians or responding emergency personnel.

The fire heavily impacted the building’s infrastructure, displacing all 24 occupants of the complex. According to fire officials, the displaced residents were successfully rehoused through coordination with their property management company.

Following an investigation, the Iowa City Fire Marshal officially ruled the cause of the fire to be an accidental lightning strike. Total property and structural damages are currently estimated at $500,000.

The emergency response required a heavily coordinated effort across the county. The Iowa City Fire Department was assisted on-scene by:

  • Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center
  • Johnson County Ambulance Service
  • owa City Police Department
  • MidAmerican Energy

While front-line crews battled the North Van Buren Street blaze, mutual aid resources were activated to ensure the rest of the community remained protected. Off-duty Iowa City firefighters were recalled to duty, and crews from the Coralville, North Liberty, Solon, and West Branch fire departments filled the gaps, responding to secondary emergency calls throughout Iowa City during the incident.
