DES MOINES – Iowa Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill to ban transgender girls from competing in school sports.

Rep. Henry Stone (R)

Introduced by Rep. Henry Stone of Forest City and Rep. Skyler Wheeler of Orange City, the bill proclaims that “any team, sport, or athletic event designated as being for only female students, based on their sex, may participate in any team being for females, women, or girls … “sex” means a person’s biological sex as either female or male.”

The bill is House File 2309.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has indicated in the past she would sign such a bill into law if it passes the Legislature.

The Iowa ACLU sounded off, saying the bill “targets transgender girls. This blocks transgender girls from participating in girls’ school sports, and that’s just wrong.”

The bill opened in subcommittee hearings already this morning.
