I went to Menards today, and as I walked up to the building I saw our wonderful dog catcher’s vehicle setting in front of the building by the exit door. As I walked by, I noticed that no one was inside, but the motor was running. When I went in I looked around to see if I could find her. She was in the carpet section, must have been checking out some carpet for the dog kennel. I have to say that in all the years that I have been going to Menards, I have never seen a stray dog around there.
Sounds like the HR person at city hall should look into this incident, but I am told this employee is above reproach and no one will even question her about anything. Just more dysfunction from our city hall.

What part of the post is not believable, the part where she drives around town all day talking on the phone, or doing her job, not. Next time I will take a picture, but Matt will have to tell me how to download it onto this site. I guess a picture might not be believable either, to some. I always thought that City employees doing personnel shopping on City time, was news.

My question. Why was the vehicle running? Not only using gas, but isnt that a security issue? What if someone would have stole the truck. Granted, it’s unlikely, but it could happen. Wouldn’t that be at her fault, keys in the ignition, and running. Seems like she gets away with way too much.
@LVS I forgot to mention, I’m glad we agree on something. @Maybe I also grew up on a farm and remember the drudgery such as cleaning out the hog house in the spring. I think I was 8 years old the first time. My dad handed a shovel and fork to my brother and me and said have at. Stacking hay in the barn on 90 degree days in July was allot of fun. So I have some perspective. Today’s big farm operations are no different than any other industrial organization and we should treat them as such.
Growing up our landlord owned 6 farms but I remember him and my father talking about the farm subsidies and he said he didn’t take any. My father and my siblings worked for him in the summer walking beans, milking cows, and everything else you did on a farm. The job I hated the most was picking up rocks.
@Griz-where I didn’t grow up on a farm I did work on my Uncle’s farm from the time I was seven or eight years old. And, it was the old way of cutting and baling. He had 300 head of hogs and two hundred head of milk cows and I helped clean, milk, herd an vaccinate all of them. It was hard work but he gave my dad eggs and meat for my work. I baled hay from the time I could first get on the rack and before that stacked in the barn. It was a different way of life back then. I did custom baling…

The description of the farmer being the sturdy yeoman of the earth, steward of the soil just does not apply today, if it ever did. I don’t know how they can keep a straight face when they say it. I also don’t know why the public buys into it. They wear out our roads and bridges burning their tax exempt fuel, foul our waters and pollute the air. Subsidized crop insurance is a bigger rip off than direct payments. They sold us another bill of goods. Don’t even get me started on my ethanol rant.

In Iowa a little over 13% of the people are getting food stamps. However, that 13% is costing the rest of us over 50 million dollars p/year. Hell of a lot cheaper to give them jobs and let them pay their own way and also pay taxes. Just saying.
Many of those people already have jobs but don’t make enough money to make ends meet. Some of them are the elderly who are on fixed incomes without the benefit of a pension or the jobs they held didn’t allow them to save much for retirement.
@bodacious-I agree there are some that really need the help and I have no problem helping them at all. There are lots of people on Social Security getting %1,000 a month and that is all they have to live on and that is disgraceful. There are also a lot of people drawing food stamps that are taking advantage of the system and are completely capable of getting another job or just plain going to work at all. I am not talking about retired people here. I think you know what I mean.
I have no issues with the single mother who is working a full time job, and no child support from dead beat fathers getting assistance. I have no issue with elderly getting assistance. I have issue with the people that REFUSE to get a job, can afford cigarettes, beer and have tattoos all over their body and need assistance. And keep having children that they cant afford to take care of, and we are footing the bill. And they use their food card for pop, candy and junk food.

Sorry @Maybe. Just a little rant. I’ve worked since I was 16. I’ve never taken a government hand out. Never been on assistance. I’ve worked for everything. To feed my child, keep the lights on, and keep food on the table. I live on my own and have done so since i was 19. I paid for two years of college, which I don’t even use now. So when I see the system being abused, it just kind of ticks me off.
“LVS” I agree everyone should work and this seems likes a lot of money, but how much do we give Iowa farmers in free hand outs. I believe we need to stop giving welfare money to all them also along with corporate America they all have their hands out. Between farmers and corporations I would be willing to bet its over 50 million a year in free money. So who is really the free-loaders?

@Maybe-Sorry-I looked at it but didn’t find anything on farm subsidy. I personally have a problem with subsidizing when they run around in brand new pick ups, have winter homes in Florida and fly there in their personal air planes. They have gotten rich over ethanol and still want more and more. Our food prices have skyrocketed in the last few years but yet we subsidize them.

@Maybe-OK, I read it and my opinion has not changed. As a matter of fact it just convinced me more that giving millionaires subsidy’s is wrong. we are guaranteeing them a profit. Do they give money back if they sell their crops for more than the government guarantee’s? We are rewarding them for following the rules and guaranteeing them for making bad decisions. That is not the way other business works and farming shouldn’t either.
You are missing my point, these knowitalls were saying that all farmers are receiving subsidies, I grew up on a farm and knew quite a few farmers and I didn’t know any then or any now that are receiving subsidies. I did read about quite a few millionaires and billionaires that bought farms and are receiving subsidies though.

The farmers that I know are all in winnebago county and they are not on the program but there are alot of farmers out there that I don’t know.
I didn’t realize there were that many farmers in this area on the program. I am friends with around 20 farmers in winnebago and worth county and none of them are on the list but there was 3 people that I know but am not friends with that are on the list and I can guarantee you they are not rich farmers.

I’m going to make an observation. What is it with so many men growing beards? Is it because of the popularity of Duck Dynasty? Some men look quite nice with a beard, if it’s kept trimmed nicely. But some look pretty bad. Am I the only one noticing this trend?

Thoughts on upcoming city council elections?
I think Marquardt should run At-Large just to keep his presence felt, but make it known that he’s spending no money and doesn’t expect MC voters to behave any differently than they already do. In other words, run just to stop them from running uncontested, but don’t put any hopes and dreams into the campaign. MC voters cannot be trusted to turn out. Who knows, he may win by attrition.
Campaign advice from you. That’s rich. What have you proven yourself to be qualified to do? Whine, complain, receive handouts, mooch, lie, run away, and tell people how smart you think you are.
My relationship with MC area was terminal, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care to see positive changes occur. I was born in MC, and grew up there. That counts regardless where I presently live. Plus I had the balls to run for city council while you puds sit around and complain.

By giving in and responding to him and his attention seeking behavior, it just keeps him going. Some of us would like to see him going, going, going until gone.
I would love to see Jodi Draper throw her hat in the ring again. She is an honest person, with a good heart, and a true love of Mason City. She listens to the people in the community, and cares about this community. I would also like to see Matt once again. He can be a bit hot headed at times, but hey, sometimes, that is a good thing. It shows that he has the backbone to stand up for what is right and what is fair. And he also cares about this community.
I think Jodi would make the best council person.
If I was elected, I would turn city hall upside down, and a lot of people would not be able to handle that. Too much truth would be poured upon the citizens. On the other hand, I always said, that’s what Mason City needs: To face up to its real shortcomings instead of ignore them, like the current structure in city hall and its media mouthpieces do. All they do is cheerlead and rob Mason City for their own gain. And that does not move this community forward. Maybe I will get involved this fall.

I have moved away. I have a full time job and a part time job. After the probationary period I’m eligible for full medical benefits, 401K, dental, Paid Time Off and 1 week vacation after one year. Combined I’ll be taking home about 2000 a month. Yes I pay taxes which are withheld automatically. I claimed 3 on total deductions which means I’m regular joe. I had a child but he was murdered. I like the job, and it’ll do for the time being. Weather is gorgeous out here.

I posted this information because LVS uses the “tax payers only” argument as he tries to shush and belittle people’s viewpoints. Saturday afternoon shift I closed out with $1253 in totals for one register (2 total)…not including gas at pump sales nor credit and debit transactions. Place is open 24 hours. Corporations rake in boatloads from alcohol, tobacco, junk food and petro.

Then wrap your head around the fact there are an estimated 153,000 convenience stores across America all peddling basically the same tobacco, alcohol and oil products. This means there are Marlboro, Camel cigarettes and Budweiser, Coors beers, Gatorade, Powerade, Red Bulls, Monsters, Rockstars and either Shell, Chevron, BP gasoline products in all those stores. You see how they become multi billionaires? And they pay us about $70 a shift to make them BILLIONS.
BTW maybe: I was watching a Netflix documentary on bath salts and synthetic drugs, and they went undercover near Camp Pendleton in San Diego, and discovered a staggering number of Marines use synthetic drugs active duty. So much for LVS’s anti drug + military cheer leading policies.

They are depending on a hotel that isn’t build yet and just because they drilled some holes means nothing. I just can’t believe a major hotel chain will build here with the low occupancy rates. Without it they have nothing.

@Anonymous-Caseys has been doing that for years. I remember after 9-1-2001 they raised their prices to $5.00 overnight and got fined for it. They will always raise it for no reason and if Kum & Go doesn’t go along with it they will drop down after 4 hours.
Did they get a delivery of gas? Stations will adjust price upon delivery of new stock to reflect any changes in wholesale gas prices. And the market price is going to be volatile in the coming weeks as there have been production issues out east due to weather, a strike at one refinery… and refiners having to switch to government mandated summer blends… they have to stop production to do this…so supplies can be variably constrained, leading to price volatility.
The politicians rationale behind the 10 cent gas increase was our infrastructure is crumbling and we need money to repair our bridges, roads and dams. Their rationale for increasing the tax on gas is that we will be getting money from those from out of state who travel through Iowa and buy gas. What I would like to know is what percentage of the gas purchased in Iowa is by Iowans. I would imagine it is well over 50%. If so, then the poorest Iowans would be paying the highest percentage.
The 10 cent increase wasn’t debated too long or too hard in the Senate or House. Why? Why not increase income tax on the richest Iowans? Why not add a luxury tax that would allow for a lower gas tax increase? We only have to look to our north and see how a higher tax on the rich and a new minimum wage can lead to prosperity.
@bodacious-Once again I must agree with you. However, one thing you might not have thought of was to use the road tax for roads like it was intended. I had forgotten our city workers get paid from this tax and that is just not right. They would have plenty of money if it wasn’t for this. This is not just our city but all Iowa cities. A lot of money that should not come out of this fund.

All this talk about guns is making me want to go down to the range and try out a scoped .270. There are lots of gun ranges in Clark County. They are very 2nd Amendment friendly here and I do like that about Nevada. This is nothing more then a way for the city to take over paying to keep the mall open. Just like back when it was built the people don’t care if it is gone. We didn’t want it back in the 1980’s and we don’t want it now. Is there anyway to get the numbers on how much the city already pays for maintenance at the mall. such as snow removal I bet we would all be surprised

@MickI heard from a ex-councilman that the city has just paid off it’s debt on the mall about six years ago. That may have been the bonds. The management company that now owns the mall picked it up out of bankruptsey for 8 million. That was one hell of a deal. If the city tries to buy it back I would bet we pay a lot more than that.
This news is nothing more then a shell game the tax-payers will fund this project then the tax-payers will rent it from the mall and do all the up keep. The people have told our elected officials we do not want to pay for a civic center downtown. If its such a great idea why doesn’t someone in the private sector build it and pay for it. OH YA its a proven fact these event centers are a money pit and we the people will be on the hook.
It makes no sense to build it there. Build it were Kmart is. You have everything you need all ready nearby.

I read the “plan” put forward in city documents. It is so far-fetched and ludicrous … turning the mall into a hockey arena? What next? This has been going on for five years, plan after plan, hotels, arenas, on and on…. as the people move away in droves. MC is shrinking right before our eyes. Only the cheerleaders are ignoring the truth out there. Everyone else knows what’s going on, because it is so evident and clear. I understand even KIMT is pulling up stakes and moving to Rochester. By the time Bookmeyer and the Chamber are done with this town, there won’t be anything left but higher taxes and tumbleweeds.
Besides the fact that KIMT only reports minnesota news, why would they move to rochester when they already have stations?
Fewer and fewer advertisers here, sources say, is one of the reasons. Dwindling population, fewer viewers here. Big, big $$$ flowing into Rochester area now. Plus, look at their building… it looks like crap. Gotta love that picnic table break room out back in the alley with cigarette butts all over the ground. Most of the people that work there are newbies right out of talking-head-school or lifers with little chance of moving up in the industry; they aren’t doing their employer any favors with their news coverage. It’s a punchline, kind of like the YMCA locker rooms. Take a peak at KAAL TV … they kept an office/studio in Austin, but tripled its presence in Rochester. My sources say KIMT will move up to Rochester and keep a small office here with 0-2 reporters and a couple of sales people.
It looks like they won’t be tearing down the mall so kids can drag Federal again.

As far as this latest laugher, well, we’ll see if it ever happens. City hall has cried wolf so many times on all this “development” in the last couple of years, no one knows what to believe anymore. Its almost like the people who dream this crap up are drunk or something.
My sources tell me there is a mass exodus planned for downtown. At least two major restaurants are looking to get out and I am even told that KIMT will soon be gone, headed for Rochester. The failure of this mayor and council is so colossal that at this point, it can’t even be quantified. I just hope the last big economic development – Harley – doesn’t implode on itself. Those boards holding up the building don’t look too sturdy.

The hotel is going to put a lot of other hotels out of business including the Park Inn and the ice skating rink will put the one at the North Iowa Events Center out of business and the performing arts if they ever build it will certainly damage Music Man Square and NIACC. Read the article, it’s not taxpayer money, and no vote will be needed. As far as our current ice rink, why should the city put one dime into it. It’s on the fairgrounds which is county, and the county supervisors don’t care squat about taking care of those grounds out there. Hockey is big here, and the fair board could care less. I hope they get these funds. It will be great for Mason City.

lvs—there is taxpayer money—but not yours or mine. it is hotel/motel tax-payer money that can either be reinvested back into our downtown or it will be granted to some other community. this project costs you nothing—quite the contrary, with millions of taxable valuation added over the long term it is a windfall for the property taxpayers of mason city. The other part of the story that seems to be missing is, the current ice arena at the fairgrounds is failed and needs to be replaced.
@jvs-I hope you are right. But, you will have to excuse me for being sceptical. I have heard all this before, (many times) and bueen burned many times. One thing that has always remained consistent is that the politicians always lie to get their way for their special interest friends.
Doing nothing and the mall closing will hurt the Park Inn. Without the mall, that leaves absolutely nothing downtown. This is a good plan. The fairgrounds and the ice arena out there is in rough shape. Why throw money into that? People have been griping about nothing being downtown, then when something is proposed, people are still complaining. Sorry, but north Iowans like to shop, and alot of them like hockey. So, personally, I think it’s a good choice.

NIACC is a great venue, and they offer a wonderful performing arts series. And another venue won’t take away from that. It will be nice to be able to maybe have other artists come to Mason City. The Surf brings in great shows, so why can’t we also. As far as the hotel, there’s a couple of hotels in town that need to go. Mason City needs growth, at least this is a start. I know we need good paying jobs too, but we need to show we aren’t becoming a ghost town either.

@Canna-get your facts straight if you are going to post. It was approved in D.C. but that is not new. It was approved last year. It is still illegal on the Federal Level and will remain so. There are no plans to bring it up in Congress. DC is in violation of Federal law just like the states that have approved it. I’ve professed a lot of my philosophy over the years, now it’s time for a plan of action 1. All drug possession charges be reduced to simple misdemeanors, equating a fine, with no jail time.2. Government/police/military positions be available to any citizen who can perform the duties physically and mentally:Prior convictions for drugs or past mental health assessments not automatic bars to enlistment/hiring.
3. Automatic deletion/erasure of all victimless crimes off your record after a period of 5 years…10 years off your record for any non-violent crime, or crimes with minimal or no lasting damage. 4. Automatic deletion / erasure of any mental health or medical files upon request (no institution should keep records on you if you don’t want them to). 5. Absolutely NO FORCED DRUGGING of any person against their will who is behaving in a non-physically violent manner.
6. Elimination of age restrictions on National Services such as the military, and policing. Age brings wisdom and life experience, and there should be no age discrimination against Patriotism and Service. Different sets of physical standards should be used to assess, and different jobs offered. But stopping someone from joining at age 27 or 34 exists more for their need to conform and control a citizen. Older citizens are invaluable and should be included in National Defense/Police
With older people joining the military, when they have to fight and possibly run to or from a battle and they all start dropping with heart attacks we could all say it was peters idea.
As was proven by inclusion of minorities as the means to topple segregation and racism,so too the quickest way to end the disproportionate under-representation of citizens within government (particularly the security component), is to break down the barriers for discrimination and segregation;inclusion into the ranks. It’s scientifically proven as a means to end strife and war. The more people inside the Army, the less will exist outside the Army. Less “enemies”=greater stability.
So you whine because they wouldn’t let you in because of what you did. It is a voluntary military with standards. Those standards change. You didn’t make the cut at the time. Get over it and move on. If they had let you in, you would have a dishonorable discharge hanging around your neck for the rest of your life or would have spent time in Levenworth for doing what YOU felt was right. My job was successful: I brought forth the truth concerning the lies and hypocrisy of those who assume themselves to be our “security” forces. WalMart has decided that they can pay their workers more money. In a decision today, they are raising their workers to $10 an hour citing the improvement in the economy and the low unemployment rate. Another couple of dollars would bring those workers close to the poverty level but I guess this is a start.

I think you may be incorrect. Im pretty sure Walmart pays more than $10 an hour. About 12 years ago, I needed a job, I needed insurance, I got a job at Walmart for the short term. Worked there for about two years unloading trucks, and I started a little above ten dollars an hour then. And had benefits after thirty days. Plus had a discount card for purchases. They treated me pretty good at a time in my life when I was having a hard time finding a job anywhere else with insurance.
The way our economy works is that we buy products from other countries and sell our products to other countries. Now if these other countries refuse to buy our product it’s because we charge more and the reason we charge more is because we don’t have the work force other countries have. I do understand that if I buy something from walmart that was made in china it won’t last as long but at least it is cheaper so I can afford to replace it.

I don’t understand what the need for this hotel is? There is nothing downtown. And if something isn’t done to save the mall, then the downtown will become a ghost town. The mall has a chance to survive if someone would take the time and effort. Put an IMax theatre in the old theatre. Put some sort of amenity in the JC Penney spot and recruit some franchises with reduced rent and incentives to come here. A hotel will do nothing if there is nothing to come to downtown.
People that live in Mason City go out of town to shop all the time because we don’t have a Gordman’s, Old Navy, Scheel’s, etc. If we had some of these stores, then people that live in rural areas around Mason City would come here as opposed to traveling elsewhere. And it would keep people that live here shopping here. Who’s going to stay in a hotel when there’s no attraction and nothing to do in this town? Especially if there is no where to shop?

I don’t take “meds”. Alcohol is a poison, and the older people get, the more havoc it wreaks on the body. I’ve talked with other friends in their forties who confess that instead of being a one or two day hangover, the hangovers are stretching to 3,4,5 days. I wasn’t having a “panic attack”. The alcohol was poisoning my body and putting me in higher probability of having a stroke or heart attack. I also have an auto-immune disorder which alcohol worsens. marijuana helps my condition

Well not that this is much, but during the Howard Dean campaign, I took a photo with both Rob Reiner and Martin Sheen on either arm of me. I also was hit on by Henry Mancini at a cocktail party at the Kennedy Center (yes I think he was gay). I watched NIN from sidestage at 1st Avenue, and saw too many SNL cast members walk before me…Steve Martin, Dan Akryod, Conan Obrien, etc. I’m nobody, but I do know how to mingle.
Unlike peter I never made guitars but a friend used to buy old guitars and amplifiers and I used to help him fix them up and sell them. I’ve done work for Eddy Van Halen, Ozzy Ozborne, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and there are more that I can’t remember. I’ve met in person almost all of them, except for George Harrison, I only talked to him on the phone. Plus I used to work at universal studios so I met a few out there also, Tom Seleck, Kenny Rogers and a few others.

as the assistant GM of a casino in vegas you can imagine the celebrities that come through there, not naming any names though.
He’s not a huge celebrity. But a number of years ago, Pat Green was at the Surf. I was on the bus chatting with him and sharing kid pictures. Kind of fun. Our kids were the same age and we found out our birthdays were on the same day. And one other time at the Surf, Dwight Yokum was playing there and I went on his bus and had him autograph a lawn blower blade. It was right after the movie Slingblade came out.
In 1974, at the height of All in the Family, my family sat at a table next to Rob Reiner, Penny Marshall & another couple at a near-empty restaurant called La Cucaracha in Reynosa, Mexico. It was really hard to not stare and to respect their privacy. I was glad for them that it was early in the evening and that the restaurant was empty except for us.
I played foosball with Ben Crenshaw and golf with Tom Posten.
I was 18 & it was wonderful. Family was in LA for the International Chiefs of Police Convention. It was Fall Sweeps time for the new TV shows, so many celebrities were staying at our hotel & were hanging out at the pool. Lee Majors-ran into him in a boutique-he was the 6 million dollar man then, Rock Hudson, Burl Ives, Ben Gazzara, George Kennedy, Frazier’s dad ?, the guys from Adam 12, Ann Francis, Wonder Woman, Julie Newmar, and others. And, many awesome LAPD officers!!! Great…
On another note: Why would Germany bother imprisoning fighters who join ISIS for a mere 4 years? The better course of action is for their citizenship to be revoked. 4 years will only give the fighter a chance to study up on the Quran, and better feel as a martyr for his religion. Just revoke and reject these people from ever setting foot in western nations again. There’s a better chance to kill them on the battlefield in Syria than to waste resources and time trying to “correct”.

But I want to say, that Iowan… I knew what he did. I felt the spirit. He rose to the occasion, and defended innocent souls from being attacked and threatened. He did what anyone from Iowa would have done, and for that I commend him–I truly do. That Iowan in that documentary made me proud. I dont’ give a damn if I believed in the war or not. He was one of us, and he did what needed to be done to defend the honor and protection of the innocent. For that I have no doubt.

have to go to Fareway for my type of Crystal Light, Hy-Vee is almost always out of the Lemon-Lime Canada Dry H2O, so we get plain and then search other stores, since Walmart doesn’t carry it. Hershey’s Sugar Free candy- only at Walmart. Hillshire Farms Pastrami for Mark-only at Walmart. Pepto-Bismol non-chewable- only Walmart. And we can’t stand the fresh meat there. Sugarfree chocolate chips- only Hy-vee but usually out. None of my beauty products are in town. OK I am done whining.

In order to complete my grocery and supply shopping in Mason City, it requires going to multiple stores to get what I want. It would seem that a stores like Hy-Vee and Walmart would stock more commonly purchased items. I live 2 blocks from Hy-Vee West so I like to go there first. Next page…
I also live a couple of blocks from Hy-Vee West (we must be neighbors) so that’s usually the first place I go, also, unless I need several non-grocery items. Then Target is my first choice.
I’ve found that if you ask to speak to a person in management at Hy-Vee and tell them what you’d like them to carry, they’re usually very good about ordering that item for you. It’s worked for me.
California is proposing legislation there that would eliminate the “personal beliefs” exemption for parents who don’t want their children to be vaccinated. Should parents vaccinate their children?
@NIT-Yes they should unless there is a medical reason not to vaccinate. If the don’t they become a danger to the rest of the population. Most people on here are to young to remember the quaranteen’s we had back in the 50’s where complete neighborhoods were sick with the measles and the young children that were scarred and killed by this terrible disease. It is just like polio in that it can and will destroy young children’s lives. People are not allowed to endanger other people.
Absolutely they should! It endangers all of us when children aren’t vaccinated. I don’t think it’s religious beliefs as much as it’s laziness on the part of parents.
I heard the former ambassador to the UN say the other day that mandatory vaccinations is the beginning of martial law. I don’t know what I believe about that.

Can anyone explain why some of the vaccinated are getting the measles? or why some of the vaccinated are dying from the flu? Everyone should do their own research before they answer this question. And I don’t mean just a simple Google search dig in there!
No vaccine gives 100% immunity to 100% of people 100% of the time in the face of overwhelming exposure. When animal vaccines are tested, they challenge the vaccines by exposing the animals to the disease. A certain percentage of vaccinated animals were expected to get sick despite being vaccinated. These challenge studies are no longer done, likely due to animal rights organizations. A certain percentage of people also do not develop immunity to vaccinations for a variety of reasons.
Because vaccinations do not work 100% of the time, 100% of people need to be vaccinated to get what is called herd immunity. If everyone is vaccinated, it is far less likely that measles will spread because those who are protected will protect those who didn’t get immunity. The problem is that we have people coming in from other countries where vaccinations are not done and we have a bunch of people here who do not understand the importance of herd immunity.
