I called police the other day to report a car swerving all over the lanes and off the sides. I was driving to Clear Lake from mason. She was on her cell and texing. Had it on her stealing wheel. Almost took the side off my car when she went past and came close to hitting a truckers front left tires. Have to stop these texters!
I’m glad the MC airport now has commercial flights again. It’s an option for traveling. It’s a needed service. HOWEVER, like other small airports, why are the taxpayers funding full-service/trained TSA staff at airports our size? It would be far more cost effective to skip the TSA screening at airports like MC, in lieu of putting the TSA service for in-bound flyers at Chicago or Minneapolis? I have dear friends working for TSA. It just makes more $ense to me.

Mr. Anonymous, I don’t have any close ties with Clear Lake. It happened to be a region I found myself in for a period of time. You may be missing the point…I didn’t go there to “fit in” or edify what’s already been built…I was put there to flip tables over, and start anew. To reach the widespread renaissance necessary to accelerate the region into the 21st Century, changes too dramatic and sudden would need to occur. I wasn’t willing to waste one more year on the area.
I gave it a shot, and was willing to try and work and build my business there, but I was highly displeased with the cultural clash, and religious indoctrination over minds; far too Children of the Corn for me. However, I had some real good ideas for that small Hamlet, and it’s the town’s loss that I was rejected. I figured with a small no-where region such as N. Iowa, to do something really different and dramatic would have put us on the map. The town was too boring for me.
The GOP House of Representatives worked 126 days in 2013. Members made a salary of $174,000.The same people cut food and unemployment assistance from millions of Americans. They said benefits make people lazy.
@Bodacious-if that is true they must have had a lot of help from the Democrats. It sure seems like nothing passed in the house went anywhere in the last two years thanks to Harry Reid refusing to allow anyone to vote if he didn’t like the bill.

I never said anything about food stamps but after rereading my post I can see where you misunderstood. I should have clarified it alittle better. There are good reasons for some people to be on these programs but you have to admit that there are quite a few that take advantage of the programs too, it’s these people that take advantage that I am talking about. As for the budget extension in a small way you are correct, there are a few republicans that are rino’s and they need to be replaced.
@Maybe-The Republicans seem to be ignoring the message that the voters sent in the last election and are going back to politics as usual. This is a lame duck congress and hopefully when the new congress takes over next year they will do business differently. It really sucks that they are supporting the milionairs on Wall Street with our tax dollars. Between this and the IRS we are getting shafted.

I agree with the GOP’s attempts to cut spending. The Secretary of Agriculture – Tom Vilsack (remember him?) has been spending money on billboards promoting U.S. Food Stamp programs IN MEXICO!!! Why? Spending is out of control, while over 13,000 prisoners in US prisons applied for and got over $1BILLION in tax refunds!!! Obama’s not in control of our checkbook. Someone needs to step up.

It appears Mason City’s plan to take over the Clear Lake School District is in trouble.
Whether or not the sharing of the Superintendent continues depends on the vote of the Clear Lake School Board.
Therefor, I solicit the opinion of Mr. Phil O. Sophus on how the Clear Lake Board will vote. And while you’re at it Phil, throw in your opinion on how they should vote.
If the two largest towns in the county are going to team up, as a smaller community, I’d wonder why my town wasn’t included in the equation. If you want a School Czar of Cerro Gordo, then include all the towns. For the size income that I heard Anita is making, I’d expect such “service”. Explain what a Super does anyway. I’d like to hear what their real duties are. Education is something everyone should be helping children with…on and off school hours. Too many video games.

Yes, the people here in Vegas are very put together. Listen, I’m from Iowa…I’m from the inferior gene pool. Being in this affluent neighborhood in this affluent city has made me realize how inferior my genes really are. I mean I’ve seen humans that are just simply stunning to look at. Women that are mesmerizing in their beauty…and I’m sure men also. They have looks, brains, wealth, and community. Mason City essentially is a bad Gene Pool of inferior DNA. That’s reality.
And rather than just accepting their lot, these inferior Iowans get bitter and mean towards everyone they come across; their family, friends, strangers…who all become the target of their unhappy rage. At the source of it, is an unhappy Iowan who is unhappy about the hand they’ve been dealt. That’s it, nothing more. I know, because I lived through the traumatic rage, of Iowans who couldn’t accept what God did to them. God wants you to worship the beautiful as per his plan.
Ok, Phili. Not sure I agree that God feels we should worship those with beauty or however you worded that. But I agree whole heartedly about some of the gene pools in Iowa, especially in North Iowa. It seems like some families keep marrying or just having sex within. And the families keep getting bigger and uglier and some of these families are ridden with crime and live off the welfare system. No class, no teeth, dirty, filty and we foot the bill.
And then there’s the people that have given up. That just dont care anymore. It’s one thing to be overweight, which I myself am. But it’s another to not give a crap. To go out in public in pajama pants that are too small with a tank top and bra straps hanging out. It’s almost as if some people have no shame. When women are heavy, dress appropriately. If you are a size 14, then wear a 14. And wash your kids faces. It’s just common sense. Ok. Off the soap box.
It’s not a soapbox you stand on…it’s the ground of reality. You are just announcing standards that you’d like to be surrounded by. I’m in those standards, and it makes a world of difference. Fire hydrants and curbs painted red, Roads and sidewalks smooth and uncracked, paint markings on roads fresh, street signs internally illuminated. I tried to get that across to Clear Lake during the election, and they couldn’t understand where I would have taken them. They judged Jesus.

Geography plays a part in this…I realize concrete and buildings are much more stressed during the swelling and shrinking of extreme colds, but the attitude of the people needs major reformation. You have to WANT to find happiness and bliss. In order for a monk to reach Nirvana, he has to start looking. People in Iowa are so damn lost and confused, they haven’t even begun the search. When the quest begins, the rest of physical and legal reality will evolve accordingly.
And I’m going to be honest: excessive religious adherence is part of the reason why Iowa hasn’t evolved as much as these areas out West. When you are constantly told that your reward lies in heaven, what’s the incentive to want to make anything out of this life? Every generation and region has a “Buddha” or “Jesus” figure who arrives on the scene to accelerate progress, innovation, overturn corruption, and allay the forces of suffering and misery. Unfortunately the non-voting masses (and voting as well) usually drive them away out of ignorance, thus the cycle perpetuates. North Iowa deserves to be punished because yet another of these characters has been driven out. And for what? Snyder Construction? Veenstra and Kim? Pleeaazz.

Does anyone out there remember where the Mason City Hotel was located? I found two stocks from my Grandfather dated is 1901 for $100.00 each (a lot of money back then) for the Mason City Hotel. Over the years there have been so many.
Didn’t that hotel have a boat in the corner?
@Maybe-there were two hotel in that block. One on each side of the old Cecil Theater. One was the Eadmore and I don’t remember the other one. The one with the boat was the Eadmore I believe.
The Park 70 movie theater.
On the south end of that block was the Cerro Gordo Hotel. A stately looking building for it’s time. I remember it well, just to bad it was torn down. It was another one of mason cities historic building that met the wrecking ball, shame. The Eadmar on the north end of the block was called the Wilson Hotel back in the horse and buggy days. Then it was the Cecil Hotel and Theater, then possibly onto the Eadmar. Grand old buildings, gone forever…
@Allen-I remember the Cerro Gordo Hotel and the Eadm. The Eadmar was right across the street from the Old Park Hospital where I was born with the Cecil in between. The Cecil at one time was also the opra house and was the nicer theater in town at the time. Then there was the Palace, Bandbox and Strand theaters all on Federal Ave. I use to go to Saturday Matinee in the Bandbox for a nickel.
The boat was part of a bar called, the ships harbor.
That was on the northeast side of the block, was there a movie theater just to the south of that?

I only have 2 memories of that theater. I got stopped for speeding right in front of it with a long line of people there, and it wasn’t me that was speeding but a friend. The other memory was riding with that same friend and leaving forest city at 8:45 and pulling into the theater at 8:59 for the 9:00 movie.
And you were still allowed to serve in the Armed Forces? Despicable.
First of all I said I wasn’t the one speeding, I just got stopped for it the first time and I was a passenger the second time so bite me.

That hotel might’ve been on third street north east directly behind the good shepherd. Right on the corner used to be the bar called the city lounge and I think Mason city hotel is connected to that.

The stocks may not have any monetary value, but the Archives may like them for their collection. At a minimum, they could be framed and hang in your home. I love old ephemera.
LVS, I would start at the county level and do some research, those stocks may be worth something unless the place went bankrupt.

I was wishing more opponents of the 2nd amendment would respond just to keep things lively. Perhaps people are more enlightened than I thought.
I don’t think all law enforcement officers are bad. I think there are some who get into it for the right reason – to serve their communities and keep citizens safe, their own safety coming second. Unfortunately, there are many officers who were bullied as kids, didn’t go to college, or for whatever other reason are seeking power to execute against others. And, because of unions (who are evil in every case) they cannot be disciplined or held to realistic standards. And, thus – we have abusive thug cops out kicking people in handcuffs, beating mentally ill homeless people to death, and of course, shooting unarmed, non-threats almost daily across this nation.
I don’t recall reading anything about unions being involved with any of the so called, bad cops, that you are taking about. And, from what you are saying, if you don’t go to college, you will have a desire to inflict pain/suffering on other people. I must be missing something in the news reports that I read and watch…
@Allen-Good comment-I don’t believe even the unions are behind the bad cops. They certainly do not want the bad press. And, the statement about not going to college just shows the lack of intelligence by “Down in Des Moines”. Most cops are dedicated public servants. Recently found out why the downtown mall keeps loosing inside stores is because the landlords are adding costs of rooftop heat-cool units and installation to the rent. All this may costs the renter upwards of $20,000. or more. This has been reported to city hall, but completely ignored by city hall. Mall landlord maybe using the mall as a tax loss while taxpayers are still stuck with the bonds that built the place years ago.
I hear a long-time coffee shop is leaving the mall.
Jitters…heading down the street to where the Republican Headquarters was this past election season. The former Jefferson / Greyhound Bus depot and recently a Bagel Depot (closed). Scott and Candy are nice people. Unfortunately the company I associated with in their coffee shop wrongly classified me as a troublemaker. That Frenchman and the computer guy were the real source of the problem…and I tried my best to help those Transition people but they were unwanted.
It was my belief that Judge Will Keen who was the judicial referee responsible for mental health committals should be able to communicate with those he was committing. He just wanted to be left alone, on his high perch while he read the newspaper and drank his coffee. I figured if he could commit people and take away their rights and subject them to being force drugged, then he ought to get to know those people, and so I invited them into the coffee house. And mgmt.didn’t like it

@NIT-I had heard that quite a while ago. We go to Yonker’s and Penny’s. The rest of the stores have nothing we want and there is very little left to choose from. Very few people there the last time we were there. They will probably want to turn it into a civic center when it goes under. That would mean we would have to pay for it twice.

I really would like to get a subscription to this site. But when I see that Phili is monopolizing the whole site, every single article. I’m wondering if it’s even worth it. I want the subscription to read the articles and local news since the Glob doesn’t report anything. I just don’t want to read all Phili’s bull. It’s ridiculous, you look over at the recent comments and it’s all him. What an ego that guy has.
He’s not violating the terms of use, uses no profanity, seems to not be on the attack against others. He’s a paid subscriber. It wouldn’t be fair to shut him out. Not saying every sentence he types is gospel. But as long as he plays by the rules, he gets to stay.
Hey, and I thank you for that. I don’t understand why people get all pissed about my use of NIT? The part I’ve been TRYING to get people to understand is that if they just posted away as they saw fit, it wouldn’t seem as though I dominate the comment feed as much. I’m used to being on big National Blog sites where your comment gets drowned among dozens if not hundreds as people compete to communicate and stay on top of things. It’s like people freeze up here. ???
I hate all his rants too but he does have the right according to the first amendment to bore the hell out of us. What I do is quickly just skim over his posts and if a word leaps out at me then I go back and read it otherwise I just ignore it.

Hey at the very minimal they could look at it like they have an insane person in their midst, so why not enjoy it? God, I think it’d be awesome if a real live wire came onto NIT and sparked my interest. Do you all remember many years ago when that one guy came on promoting bestiality? That blew my mind. I had been off of NIT for months, and came back to see people accusing him of being me…which I wasn’t!
Oh, I get the freedom of speech thing. And he had used vulgarities at times, and that seems to be okay according to the NIT staff. And no NIT should let everyone post. My step brother is a lot like Phili. He thinks he knows everything about any and everything. My step brother does not have a job, and has no desire to get a job. It’s everything in my power not to stab a fork in his forehead at holiday gatherings. And yes, I could just skip over Phili’s comments. But they are EVERYWHERE! It’s like he just can’t stop. Hey anonymous, it’s a powerful thing to wake up one’s mind; you should try it sometime. Not everyone can handle it;some either become scared and run to the doctor thinking they’re going crazy or they actually do become insane. Most use like a fraction of their brain. The biggest freedom you can win is to watch the sun rise and set across the entire sky laying in your hammock eating no food, drinking little water. You may just break free from the compulsions/inflictions.

I didn’t go out into the Friday madness. I went to Shopko Thursday night for one item. Waited in line for about 20 minutes and that was it. Everyone seemed pleasant and nice. It was Wednesday evening at Hy-Vee East in the parking lot. Some people were so rude, honking their horns for others to hurry up and get their groceries put into their trunks so they could have their parking spots. It was ridiculous.

Well Philli hasn’t ended up anywhere…other than currently he’s in Las Vegas, NV enjoying 60 degree days and plenty of sunshine. But yeah, I wouldn’t want to see this kid have an out of wedlock child get murdered and a heartless 12 member jury set the killer free with total impunity towards my family. I use foxfire and have had zero popups, maybe you are infected, your computer too.

I think Matt is playing the field like seriously. He has so many links and spam pop ups to NIT that stuff goes bonkers quick. Chrome automatically filters all that crap out, but firefox doesn’t by default. NIT is riddled with hidden crapola. My eyes have been awakened behind the scenes. Wow…hes working those ads and SEO’s something fierce.
Windows 8 sux ass. It is possible that I was routed thru a false Firefox download that highlights and links words to endless spam ads. Internet explorer is nothing but a disease. Its getting sickening how infested the internet is. What in the hell is wrong with humanity?

Matt- I’d appreciate the ability to at least read the comments to articles without having to pay for a subscription. Now that I cannot even do that there is no point in coming to the site. I believe that policy has changed. I saw a notice that was on here for several days that said even non-subscribers could read the articles in the Watercooler. When I checked the Watercooler I noticed almost all of the most pertinent articles were showing there.

The “Chocolate Covered Ant” businessman that I spoke of earlier is an imagined person who makes chocolate covered ants and sells them as a product…but one that society doesn’t necessarily want. It becomes unsustainable for this man to meet the demands placed on him via rent/mortgage etc so tyranny forces this man to give up his love of manufacturing chocolate covered ants, and forces him into a role deemed acceptable by the group dynamic…not the individual.
But more specifically when you analyze it, it is not the group dynamic at all, but a very narrow special interested group who control real estate, utilities, taxes, food, medical care, telecommunications. To meet their demands you have to either be able to seduce dollars from other citizens or work for people who are able to seduce dollars. Save for the basics, people are engaged in a dance…a con…some have horded monies over multi generations, and they control the dance.
In that comparison are you supposed to be the salesman? Because we sure feel like the ants you are smothering with your chocolate nonsense.
Individuality versus Group conformity I guess is the point I’m making. I’m actually quite flabergasted as to the level of conformity present in North Iowa. It literally obscures people’s vision and comprehension abilities. There is no real freedom and individuality in such a scenario because those who control the group think, who control the housing, the bank loans, the zoning codes, control the masses like puppets, and the people are forced into the roles assigned to them.
There is only one real freedom possible…one that allows individuals to pursue their dreams at liberty, free from the demands and conformity inflicted upon them, and that is with land designation. Everything else is a con, a swindle, a seduction. With land reservation, comes true freedom, and with true freedom comes the ability to innovate and create, beyond the borders and chain link fence of group conformists who control things.

Here is some more INFO for you unbelievers. As of Jan. 1, 2015 the Federal Government (Emperor Obama) will no longer subsidize the states Obamacare. This will put a additional burden of millions of dollars on the states. I am not sure if Iowa comes under it or not. I think possibly not as I seem to recall that was the reason Branstad set up the Iowa Plan. Minnesota however, certainly does fall under it. Good luck tax payers, you taxes are going up.

I just finished a casting call interview for a reality TV program based on an internationally known Reiki Healer who supposedly removes blockages from your life. It’s a paid gig. I concur that global warming is real and we need to plan for rising sea levels, extreme drought affecting food supplies and social unrest, etc. The earth’s climate has always been in a state of flux and to believe that mankind has caused this latest upheaval is granting us too much credit. It has not been proven that mankind is responsible nor has it been proven that our actions can reverse the process. We have adapted to change in the past and we will in the future.
If you can rise above the politics of this issue and simply see what Mother Nature is up to, it is hard to dispute that something is happening to the Earth’s climate. Mega storms, cat 5 tornados all over, extreme heat and cold, 8-foot snows in the Northeast, rising sea levels, shrinking ice cap at North Pole. Something is happening. What is the source of the change is the sticking point.

I talked to one of the top scientist in this field today and he told me the report in Google was pretty much garbage and that it was nothing more than alarmist stirring up the pot. He said that plants absorb CO2 and then they are eaten so they can not release the CO2 they have absorbed. It is all part of the natural process. He said the climate is changing but the real scientist will tell you it is a natural occurrence and no one can say how much we are causing.

maybe, I read the post and it seems rather alarmist to me but at least I read it. Did you notice at the end of the article he wants you to send him money to help right this wrong? And he promises that he won’t keep a penny. That right there is enough for me to turn my mistrust meter on.

It was nice to see a decent amount of people in Southbridge Mall Friday evening. Walkers, shoppers, young and old. 80’s music. A new holiday store. It’s a shame that the mall seems to be missing out on the fact that people would love to be there, but they aren’t given enough reasons to go.
I agree……there’s just not enough reason. I was there Friday afternoon. I might make one more trip before Christmas, but that will probably be it. I am hoping the vendor with the amazing home made jams and chocolates will be there on the weekends during the holiday season. If not, I will check at Willowbrook, it seems there’s more going on there lately.
We were at the mall last week at lunch time and if it hadn’t been for a few people in the food court it would have been deserted. There are more empty stores now then there have ever been. I would think it would pick up before Christmas. One last gasp.
@LVS & Maybe, I get the fact that you disagree with Obama, I’m cynical in my thinking about him myself. His positions on immigration and gun control, to name a couple, are wrong in my opinion. Maybe, I am not naive. I lived in a big city for many years. I saw the lawlessness, crime and violence on a daily basis. I can see that we have serious economic problems. I know we have international problems. I have family members who are struggling with addictions, job security, and health care issues. I absolutely believe we aren’t in a good place but I refuse to lay the blame on one group of people. Our political system is a two way street. And right now it isn’t going anywhere.
All those things you refer to that are going wrong in this country didn’t just appear in the past 8 years. They have been here. And nothing is being done to address those problems by either party. Our system is what is broken. We need to fix that rather than cast blame. That is what Hitler did in Germany. He blamed the Jews for all the problems Germany had after they lost WWI. And the people bought into it because it’s human nature to deflect away guilt onto someone else.

If and when the pipeline is completed the US will use less than 1% of the refined product for our consumption. The rest will be sold by Canada to foreign governments around the world. Not one single drop of oil will be available to anyone at any price for years.

@Jed-Why can’t we do both? I don’t think we will run out of available manpower. Lot’s of people would love to have those good paying jobs. The North Dakota oil fields are good but they are maxed out right now as far as housing is concerned. This pipeline is for the future. If it will help keep the price of energy down I am all for it.
We need to be using the last reservoirs of fossil fuels to design and prepare for the next round of energy sources: solar, wind, fuel cell, hydrogen etc. I’m not intrinsically opposed to this pipeline IF it is used with aforementioned preparations in mind. To just indiscriminately power the millions of automobiles on the road should not be the goal of this project. Be smart, prepare for the future. Use Oil appropriately.
I read yesterday that a longtime Mason City resident and his wife are picking up and immediately moving to Rochester. They will be gone by end of week. Couple weeks ago, a single mom and her three kids revealed that they were immediately moving to Ames. Good people, now gone. Seems to be that the good people of Mason City are fleeing in droves, leaving what is left to the Beje Clark deviants and the elite crooks that run the city. There is no end to this trend in sight. What will be left?

But the drunks and druggers are much worse today than I have ever seen them. @Matt-I saw where one of those houses in the 100 block of South Monroe was for rent for $700.00 p/month. Who in their right mind would ever pay that to live in one of those dumps. They get the subsidized through HUD and then have five to ten people move in and tear the place up. When they finally kick them out or put them in jail HUD pays to fix the dump up and it starts all over again.
They do get pricy. And the banks aren’t giving loans out easily, so who can buy? The landlords have a nice racket going, no doubts. As fast as people are leaving town – and I do mean in droves – there won’t be anyone to rent to soon, and Beje can crank out only so many meth dealers making a paycheck at KFC. The town is in a vicious cycle into the abyss, much like a Moscow Mule gushing down the engorged windpipe of a bloviating, fat red-haired baboon.

@Bob Tail-You had better get your eyes checked. I can look at my window and see five houses that used to be owned by single family’s and are now owned by slumlords. If you go downtown by the old High School you can see all those fine old homes that used to be single family are now multi-unit rentals. It is all over town. The banks will not loan on a house unless you have 20% down and few have that money to spare.
I know three(3) families that relocated locally from out of state, all with children in school. They visited both Mason City and Clear Lake school systems and they all bought homes in Clear Lake.
They said the school system sealed the deal for them.
Interesting. I wonder if those families Googled the Mason City School District and found out kids get charged with felonies for pealing bark off an ash tree and that tipped the scale to Clear Lake.

2 nights ago while travelling in between Albuquerque and Gallup I was pulled over by a New Mexico State Trooper; he asked me why I was driving so slow. I was going around 55 mph climbing up 6% grade elevation with a 3 cylinder automobile. I explained this to him, but he ran my license and plates anyway. He returned my license and said “Have nice trip”. He was nice enough guy, but clearly this was a violation of 4th amendment probable cause. I believe minimum posted is 40 mph.

It was cold and I felt sorry for them…dropped him off in Gallup. He was fishing for Colorado potheads crossing state lines.
Semi’s carry alot of weight and it is hard for them to get up the hills, thats why they drive slow going up the hills. You were in a car going slow going up the hills, hence you were singled out as suspicious.
Strictly speaking I did not trigger probable cause. Most minimum speeds on interstates are 40 mph and given my car is a 3 cylinder Geo metro, with the terrain i was climbing, the officer should have realized as much. Besides, my car handles best around 55 mph. I drove 55 pretty much the entire 2000 mile trip.
What did the officer say when you pointed out the errors of his actions? I know why he pulled you over, it was because you were probably hunched over towards the center of your car, looking like you were having another spell and rocking back and forth while wearing those Mickey Mouse ear headphones. At what point did the hitchhiker offer to kill himself so he didn’t have to listen to your bizzaro ranting? Are you two engaged now? Did you give him some land too?
Actually he did all the talking. He also suffers from epilepsy though he says “Gran Mal”, and he needs Cannabis to ward off seizures. He was going on about how he rescued 14 dogs who were left to die in Las Vegas, NM, and that he kept one of them (in my car), and also talked about street alcoholics who bullied him around in Boulder, but that he used Akido to subdue one and they never bothered him again. and that he was looking for his hitchhiking girlfriend going from city to city.
You should probably do some research as to what constitutes probable cause and whether there have been challenges to what you classify as an illegal stop. The judges in our area grant motions and the stop (and therefore the case) is thrown out.

Presidents do this a lot. Bush signed a law continuing indemnity for nuclear power companies. It is common to help weed out frivolous lawsuits.
@bodacious-I believe the issue is that he is releasing and enabling these people from any personal responsibility if they go where there is a deadly disease and bring it back here, and through their carelessness give it to a innocent people. That is a whole different deal as he could be endangering you and your family as well as mine. If that volunteer to go that is fine, but they must be responsible.

Target offered their employee’s $1.00 p/hour more to work Thanksgiving. Not time and a half or double time, just a dollar. And they go after Walmart but never Target.
I guess I’m in the minority. I don’t mind the stores being open. I’m not a Walmart shopper, so if that was the only store, I would not go shopping. It’s just my husband snd I and our daughter. We have no other family. So for me, my daughter and I will spend some time together, and my husband will be home watching football or some marathon on t.v. The holidays are kind of sad for families like ours. So something to do is kind of nice. On Christmas we enjoy going to the movies.
@anonymous- I don’t think this is about the shopper’s. There are a lot of people who don’t have family in the area and don’t mind shopping. It is about the worker’s who are forced to work or else they could lose their jobs. If the stores made it voluntary I don’t think people would mind. In our case, we have a large family that are coming to our house so, we will spend time with the family.

When I worked at the casinos in vegas I didn’t have a choice, if I was scheduled to work on a holiday and I didn’t show up I was fired. If it was a normal work day and I didn’t show up I was disciplined but holidays were different. I just saw an article about Kmart saying the same thing for their employees.

@anonymous-Mostly it is oil or pills made from the oil that have some medicinal purpose. A lot of our drugs are made from natural plants and herbs so that doesn’t surprise me at all. There is a huge difference between medicinal pot and recreational. Uncontrolled use of pot has really bad effects on people’s brain and even their heart. They are finding more and more every day.

Way to much money being paid to the public union workers and schools. Also, the massive pensions we pay to the legislature should be stopped.
Someone please tell me why many state employees pay exactly ZERO for their healthcare insurance. Of course, these are the union workers. This isn’t right. Why can’t they pay their fair share? Even the ones who aren’t union pay only 20% of their premium. That’s just their premium. Apparently they pay nothing for any charges they rack up. This has to change, and soon. I can’t keep paying for my own healthcare PLUS that of our state employees. It’s draining me!
@JMO-I have been saying that for years. On top of that they are asking for a 8% wage increase. It is nothing but greed on their part. They could care less as long as they get theirs. The people on a fixed income just keep going farther in the hole.
JMO, I think they should be paying a portion of their insurance too – somewhere above 50% of the cost. Where above that, I am not sure. When health coverage was first added to state employees wages, it was because they were not paid very much. The added benefit of health insurance helped to keep, and to acquire, some well-qualified people. 30-40 years ago health insurance wasn’t a big deal. Now it is. teachers DO NOT get 100% paid insurance in most districts usually 66/33 split w/district
Insurance is part of the compensation package. It helps equal out the disparity from the lower salaries of public employees compared to employees in the private sector. If you eliminate the higher paid employees (like coaches and doctors) public employees earn less that their counterparts in the private sector.
@Nicole-I don’t know what state or what city you live in but it can’t be Iowa or Mason City. I see the list of salary’s posted in the paper and I know what people in the factory’s make and believe me the public workers make a lot more and their insurance and other benefits are a lot better.

I see a problem here peter, IF it was me driving through colorado going to a place where I can but something that is illegal here that can make you feel higher than a kite. After hours of driving the very last thing I would be thinking about was what I said online.

Here is some interesting information I picked up. One of the biggest lies told to the American people (other than Obamacare) it that wheat bread is healthy. Wheat is the perfect chronic poison. Americans eat 55 pounds of wheat flour every year on average and it is the number one source of calories in our diet. 2 slices of wheat bread is equal to two teaspoons of sugar. The food industry and government has lied to us so they could sell a cheap product. People think they are eating healthy.
Wheat bread is considered healthier then white bread. Because they bleach the wheat white, to make white bread. In addition, white bread turns into sugar easier because of this process.

I think it’s great that you are looking into health facts, but white bread is less healthy compared to whole wheat by every study I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen several). According to the article all wheat is bad for you and it was a lie told to us to help the food company’s sell the cheapest product. As a diabetic I was particularly shocked to see the glucose levels in wheat bread. I have pretty much quit eating bread for the last year and have lost about 40 pounds. I have one slice of wheat bread with dinner. I am stopping that too now.

@John- i agree that most of the time we agree, but this time I really must disagree. It is time for someone to be the adults in the room and I am hoping it will be the Republicans. It does no good to spend a lot of time on something you know will be vetoed. Much better to take as much as you can get, but get something. There is so much that needs to be fixed after the last six years and they must show they can get something done.
I also agree with you LVS. I know these bill will get vetoed, but send one up on small parts of Obamacare, one by one and have the Republicans make a press conference and tell the public why they are doing it. Let Obama veto it, it will show the American public what is really going on in this health care bill and will educate them. I am not saying repeal the whole thing in one step.

LVS, please educate yourself. My cousin was just out there. He brought back a pamphlet that explains how you can use cannabis in CO. It’s legal to use it in hotels IF they allow it. And, please tell me how you’re going to stop a person from chewing a gummy bear (or brownie, etc.) loaded with cannabis. This is how a lot of people use it. Smart people know better than to fill their lungs with smoke. (Smart people also refrain from commenting on topics they know absolutely nothing about.)

But I do support recreational use and legalization efforts nationwide. A plant should never be persecuted. Buzz, I’m still your hero, and you know it. It snowed here pretty good. It’s beautiful where I’m at…a truly vibrant, hip and energetic community. Wow, what mason city is missing!

The people I’m seeing around here are dynamic, modern, upwardly mobile people, many very stylish and quite beautiful. But, Colorado has a lot of types, and they’ve all been very down to earth and nice. I really do like it here.

Understandably, geography plays part of the equation, but culturally, there can be no excuse for how one region thrives and another dives. Mason City has made some strides, but there is really no comparison. Attitudes, beliefs, tolerances, are a big part of what separates these two regions.

@Sue-There are a lot of people under quarantine in Minnesota as I thought there was. Like, Iowa, they will not tell you where they are. I have it in pretty good authority that our health department in conjunction with other health agency’s and the Mason City Airport have put in a plan to watch for anyone coming here by plane. We now have direct flights from Chicago to here.
I figured there were more people being monitored than what they are telling us. They can think they have a plan in place for Ebola but I doubt it will work unless they stop incoming flights with people who have been over there. Monitoring wont work. I don’t see this ending well at all and its all because of incompetence.
