CHARLES CITY – A former Hampton man who was accused of sex abuse charge but pled guilty to a lesser charge has been caught littering in Charles City, where he now lives, and police found a controlled substance when they stopped his vehicle.

The incident took place on July 1, 2019, at about 8:42 PM. Officer with the Charles City police department conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of South Jackson Street and Waller Street. During the traffic stop, a controlled substance was found by a K9 unit that was on the scene. The driver, 28-year-old Kentreil Gainey, formerly of Hampton but now living in Charles City, was arrested for driving while suspended. Gainey was also charged with littering on a public roadway and no valid registration. Police say other charges are pending.

Back in 2014, Gainey was charged by Hampton police with two counts of felony C sexual abuse in the third degree against a female subject under 20 years of age. The incident allegedly took place on July 12, 2013. Court notes say Hampton police described the incident as “contributing to the delinquency of a minor.”  On Thursday, July 2, 2014, Gainey entered an Alford Plea – meaning, he does not admit the act, but admits that the prosecution could likely prove the charge. He pled guilty to assault causing bodily injury and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail on both counts, to run concurrently.
