MADISON COUNTY – A woman walking along a very busy stretch of Interstate 80 in Iowa was struck and killed by a van driver.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident took place on October 24, 2024. At 7:00 AM that morning, two pedestrians were walking along Interstate 80, westbound, near mile marker 98 in Madison county. One of the pedestrians entered the traveled part of the roadway into the path of on on-coming vehicle. A 2020 Ford Transit van driven by 25-year-old Mercedes Gambrall of Grimes, Iowa, struck the pedestrian, 45-year-old Mandy Wendland of Omaha, Nebraska.
As a result of the collision, Wendland was thrown into the north ditch. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
