Senator Amanda Ragan of Mason with former Senate President Jack Kibbie of Emmetsburg after the Iowa Senate celebrated the 50th anniversary of the creation of Iowa’s community college system.
Sen. Ragan spoke during debate this week in Des Moines about the benefits that North Iowa Area Community College has brought local residents. Ragan supports a four percent increase in state support for community colleges this year.
Former Senate President Jack Kibbie, who helped lead the effort in 1965, spoke to the Senate and reminded legislators of the days when both parties strongly supported Iowa education at every level.
Dozens of unread Mason City Shoppers were found in a dumpster Thursday afternoon. They seemed to be all mostly recent editions.
Why do they even print this thing? No one wants it. What a waste. Or if the Glob wants people to receive it, they should put it in the paper as an insert. After seeing this, I will be making a call to the Glob today to complain.
Why aren’t they recycling these instead of adding them to our landfill? Let me guess… laziness?
By now every city should have a joint waste management/recycling program where city workers are paid to sort through trash. Many cities have this feature. It frees up citizens from needing to sort and rinse recyclables. I proposed this during my run for city council: another commonsense good idea that would have enhanced the quality of life in the region. But nope, so-called “background”, “job” history, and noise were more important to them.
This would be a good job for you to do. It isn’t like you have anything else to do with all of your time. Other than mopping up after yourself, what do you do? Besides, you could DONATE your time while sorting through the garbage and save us all some money.

From the looks of the dumpster, I’m going to say the shoppers are being recycled, at 521 3rd St NE. But, I have seen the garbage cans in East Park half full of shoppers, and I know they aren’t getting recycled.
And not getting ready or even unwrapped from the rubber band originally put around them. I think the delivery person is just dumping them, not delivering them. I say, kudos to that individual, because usually, the Shoppers end up on the streets, yards, and sidewalks of Mason City and rot there for months.
I feel sorry for the businesses that paid money to advertise in the Shopper and obviously got ripped off.
Same on N.Rhode Island in Highland area of town.Different pile each week turns yellow and never gets delivered.Lots of $ spent to print and by stock too just throw in trash each week.Hopefully they Recycle!
Most shoppers are delivered by the district managers.
@Anonymous-Not in my area of town they aren’t. I see different kids delivering them and now there is a lady doing it. My wife knows her and she is not a manager.
A woman fell on a sidewalk Thursday afternoon around 2:30 PM in the Cultural Crescent, near 2nd Street NW and Federal Avenue. She cut her face and an ambulance arrived to treat her on the scene.
It doesn’t surprise me much when you look at the people walking down town.
A lot of people from The Manor walk outside for exercise. Is the sidewalk in good shape? If not, here comes another lawsuit.
A society that doesn’t invest in its pedestrian and cyclist pathways is a lazy and oil addicted one. All sidewalks along with streets should be paved by the city out of general tax funds. This antiquated idea of home or business owners being responsible for their own “cakes” is ridiculous. It has only led to inconsistency and unevenness. This KIMT reporter blew through a red light I was stopped at today at about 5:30 PM, at Delaware Avenue and 3rd Street NW. She was going so fast, she blew through the next yellow light on 4th NW. Once I got going, I watched her weaving in and out of traffic (no signals) as she proceeded north on Federal. I followed as best I could and watched her get out of her vehicle on 300th Court. I called the police because her driving appeared to be dangerous, told them where she was and who I am. The deputy told the dispatcher when he got out there that “nothing appeared to be reckless”. Ya, she was already stopped, my friend. This is why I will be installing at least one dash cam in the NIT mobile. Then I will be presenting video evidence of idiotic, selfish, reckless drivers and bikers. So you all can be watching for that very soon.

I appreciate your note. However, this was not done as a criticism. This was a public service. I attempted to have this dangerous driver removed from the road before she killed someone just so she could make a deadline. Since the police blew the situation off, I did a news story instead, to bring public awareness that it might not be safe to drive if you see this person nearby in her KIMT vehicle.
Next time I will have video. The NIT mobile has the dash cam installed now. It is pretty sweet.

The mall is there. Been there for quite awhile. Now something needs to be done to keep the downtown going. Without the mall being a vital part of downtown, nothing will survive, and that will not be good for the Park Inn either. I’m sure there are some people in the community that have an alternative plan if the state dollars don’t come thru.
And like it or not, the hockey rink will probably still be an option with or without those state dollars. There are many families in Mason City that are involved with Youth Hockey. And those families would love to see this happen. Quite honestly, I think it’s a good draw. With that, they can get more retailers into the mall, and make it a vibrant place again. We all need to be positive and be supportive. None of us want this town to fail.
@Anonymous? Hockey is seasonal. What are you going to use it for the other 8 months of the year. That has to be the dumbest reason I have ever heard for spending millions of dollars.
The area will get used. Unfortunately sometimes it takes money to make money. The building is already there and it needs to be used for something. There is no tearing it down and putting those stores back like it was before the mall. I too remember how downtown used to be, and it was great. But it’s impossible to go back in time like that. I’m all for anything that will help our community.

@Anonymous-I believe Matt is correct. I seem to remember reading a very small blurp about it hidden in the GLOB. They raised taxes and din’t even have to ask for approval.
Yes they raised the tax levy and blamed the state legislature and governor for it. All the school districts are doing this now. The rumor is that the Republicans want to “do away” with public education, create private schools.
Matt, this site is really slow to load after about 5 pm. I take that to mean you have a huge readership all trying to access NIT when they get home from work.
I don’t always agree with you. For instance, I like the culture our city council is bringing to downtown Mason City. But I also want Mason City to cater to the middle class more. Why wasn’t there an ice skating rink in East Park this past winter? Why weren’t the family movies shown at East Park last summer?

Sorry about the site loading time. Yes the traffic is high until later after 9 pm. It picks back up when folks get to work after 8 am. Easier on the weekends and on nice days when people are outside doing other things.
I don’t think the city council has brought any culture to downtown MC. The people of MC did that (bought the improvements and infrastructure) by paying tens of millions of dollars for all the renovations in that area. Beer is not culture, by the way, even though I like the brewery. Lots of empty storefronts there. When will they be filled? What about the crime problem downtown? To me, that is part of the culture in the downtown. Not trying to be negative in saying that; it’s just how things are. Most of the time, the downtown is pretty much dead, especially after 6 pm. Just a fact. There’s a few people in a few bars, and sometimes the FLW hotel has about a dozen cars parked out front. The mall is a mausaleum. The OP is deserted and falling apart. It is not a “happening” area. Yes, tearing down a few rat traps helps, but there’s lots more where those came from. How will those be dealt with? This council and mayor have served for at least 5 and a half years now. Some longer. That’s a long time for such meager improvements to have come about. They let the rotten houses stand for years before they did anything about it; the crime is as bad as ever; the storefronts are mostly empty; there is no hotel breaking ground in the public lot next to city hall; there’s still a gravel lot on Federal and 2nd NW; the mall is an embarrassment; millions have been spent by taxpayers to prop up WELFARE ROW, for Scott Moorman, Robin Anderson and Jay Lala on Federal. They and their cronies are the only ones profiting. The rest of the town has been ignored too long.
@N.I.T-I completely agree with you. I can remember the time when the downtown area was vibrant and full of people every evening. It died when the allowed the mall to be built and nothing has changed since then other than playing favorites. There is no culture there and putting in a ice skating rink will not change that (if it ever happens).
Yea you can see pictures that prove what you say at the library. Just ask the historian to pull out photos from the 1960’s (50 years ago) and you’ll see people all over the downtown having a great time, no matter what the weather was like. All these idiots blowing millions down there are just driving up our taxes and letting the rest of the community go to hell. I built and run a website for a local custom fabricator/artist in Las Vegas and reducing image quality helped page load faster. There are some more advanced tips in the link. I too get frustrated by the often slow performance of the NIT beast.
One of the reasons Whiner’s Den takes forever to load is because he puts all 50,000 comments up at one time, instead of posting about 100 comments at a time, and then asking readers to load up more comments if they want to read further back. If you see the long scroll line to the right of your screen, you can see how many comments there are at once. All those, including his image and video links are loading up at once. He should reduce it to about 100 comments at a time.

She goes a little too far: pot doesn’t cure cancer (but it sure makes it easier to get through chemo treatments). If it did, everyone who has cancer would be using it, whether legal or not. But I do agree with a lot of what she says.
Medical marijuana is coming to Iowa (in spite of Gov. Branstad), and I can’t wait.

@JMO-I am all for anything that will help relieve people from their suffering. Most of our drugs are derived from natural plant and animals. Pot has a stigma to it that is difficult to overcome. I am still not in favor of recreational pot. There are enough things out there to make people stupid without adding to the list.
The reality is using a substance has nothing to do with a person’s intelligence levels; you operate on cliche’s and propaganda when you talk like that. Intelligence assessment is based on a wide variety of genetic, environmental, cultural, physical, chemical factors. There’s nothing quite like hanging around your place of origin griping. Yeah, there’s plenty of alternative news sources, radio and television stations out here to choose from. I’m thinking of sourcing through VegasAllNetRadio.com to create my own show. There are television opportunities in Hollywood available to start your own show. I decided to just “go with it”, and live the American Dream. Consume all of the rich goodies out there without second thought to the consequences. Gobble those Cheeseburgers and suck those sodas down. I know how to not crap my pants: it’s called “DON’T CONSUME 80% of the food offered out there.” Now with that said, diapers have been considered but I’d rather just stop eating fast food. I don’t get the strong urge to defecate when I’m eating sensible food.
I guess the point I’m making is that corporate America is a big crappy lie. They market all these junk products to us which taste so damn good, but fifteen minutes later, you’re on the verge of shitting ur drawers. In a busy city with intense traffic, getting hit with all the Dr. Pepper and Cheeseburgers you consumed doesn’t leave u many options. I’ve known plenty who end up crapping their brains out after a trip to McDonald’s and Burger King so don’t act so damn precious.
Well, they do serve poison, pretty much. Although I have to admit, I took a trip to the Northwood casino (which should have been built here in MC) this weekend with two ladies and after awhile I had to visit the BK, situated just a few feet from the gaming tables. I hadn’t had any BK in about 3 years or so. Hunger got the best of me… and I’ll admit, the food was decent. Eight to ten tic tacs later, and I was all good.
I love Burger King. We worked on the interior of my car for about 4 hours and I brought back Burger King for the guys and we devoured it…soda pop too. I add mayo to my double cheeseburgers and the taste is phenomenal. But it does something bad to your body and particularly your digestive system which hits you later. The combo of Dr. Pepper and Double Cheeseburgers is septically lethal. I made the mistake of going on a binge the next day eating more, which led to the soiling.
NIACC announced in March that the last of the students who were waiting to move into the newly-constructed (way past schedule) NIACC dorms have moved in. This is part of the marvelous scenery outside their dorms:

The city council and mayor must be ecstatic; here are some jobs that pay over $9.50 an hour!
Aldi’s does pay pretty well. But they do not take checks, so they don’t have the fees associated with cashing checks and the fees with bad checks. They only take debit cards and cash and food stamp cards. It saves the company money. Also, to use a cart at Aldi’s you have to pay a quarter to unlock the cart, then when you return it, you get your quarter back. That way the carts aren’t left all over the parking lot and are kept in good shape, again saving the company money.

Does the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s office play favorites to the who’s-who in Mason City? I heard first hand that Sue Schukei, wife of the auto dealership owner was arrested for DWI in Nov/December 2014…yet after viewing mug shots..NO picture. WHY?

I don’t know about the sheriff but the County attorney’s have been rumored to play favorites. The sheriff or police can arrest all they want but if the attorneys refuse to charge them they would be set loose. Also, the judges could give them a deferred sentence and of course the GLOB would never print anything about one of its advertisers family.

I am always discussed when people ask if there is any State or Federal money to pay for a project. They are both our tax dollars, (if you pay taxes.) I disagree with the Fed and State tax money going to fund projects. If it is a viable project that is going to be financially sound, let private industry fund themselves. We have to stop looking for State and Federal funding to do things. They should not be taking tax dollars from us and deciding where they are going to spend it. Work for a change.
This is a common thought process for government intervention into private business. Playing favorites with public money. We saw it play out with Metalcraft, taking hundreds of thousands to move way out west, while Huber Supply gladly took their old building and made it ten times nicer and never begged for a dime. Not how I want my taxes put to use, just so Scotty Tornquist’s former neighbor can live high. The arena will put MC into the poorhouse even faster. And this mayor and council are making it clear, they intend to do this deal come hell or high water, with or without state help. See, they have no legacy to speak of (outside of a dwindling population and making a mockery of the democratic process), and this downtown deal will be it if they can make it happen.
@ NIT, very good example of what I said. Metalcraft was never going to leave town but look what they got. We have to stop the hand outs, especially for existing businesses. If we need to attract new jobs, yes consider it but it seems like all Mason City is doing is paying to keep jobs here and not attract anything new.

Agreed. It appears that in Mason City economic development mostly consists of moving a business from point A to point B and luring more crappy retail jobs. Robin Anderson, her entourage, and several city workers were in downtown Mason City working on sculptures Monday – apparently installing a new one at this location on East State Street near Penn Avenue. All of last year’s sculptures are gone, and there’s been no announcements on if any were sold. Presumably, new ones are on the way for this year.

Matt, didn’t actually read it, but heard something about it. It was in the Globe. The city council is proposing having people’s vehicles towed for traffic violations? Do you know anything about this?
@Anonymous-It is true. They are looking at passing a ordinance that would impound peoples vehicles for certain offenses. Driving without a license or insurance, transporting illegal drugs or weapons, driving on a suspended license and I think there were a few more. Cedar Rapids already has a similar plan in effect. They tabled it this week to do some more studying on it. Not a bad idea as they have to do something to stop repeat offenders.
I think that this is a good idea. There are a lot of people out there driving around without a license or insurance which other people pay for. OWI should be added also. The problem that the city is going to have is finding a place big enough to keep all the vehicles. Then after a certain length of time the scoff laws don’t come to get their vehicles, the city can sell them at auction. Might be able to pick up a decent vehicle on the cheap. Let’s git er done.

Yes it is in the council packet, which I always read, from the last meeting. It has been tabled pending a council “work session”. So it is not finalized quite yet, but you can expect it to pass 6-0. Since the city’s budget is tighter than Robin Anderson’s cold clammy hand grip, they need cash, and this is one way to raise it.

So anyone can read and make comments in those limited areas. Mayor Keith Summey of North Charleston, S.C. announced state charges against the officer at a news conference Tuesday.
Not every cop is bad but with almost everybody having a cellphone with a video camera it seems as if every cop is bad.
With all the rulings across tne nation allowing for police to shoot and kill, this cop thought he’d be no different…except the person using the cellphone camera was there. I’m surprised those cops seemed like they didn’t notice the person filming them or didn’t care. Well this definitely screws up this cops day, because he probably thought he had one in the bag. Strangely, the law may allow for this type of killing to be justified. Let’s see how it plays out.
The main problem I see with this is right after he shot the victim he turned and looked at the camera then walked away like it was no big deal.
This is the smoking gun of videos that will force widespread reform and citizen oversight of police. It shows us firsthand how cops place potential weapons near the deceased. I can’t believe they ignored the cellphone video taker, which speaks volumes to the smug audacity of cops these days. I noticed the black cop with the blue latex gloves drops something near the body, and they are saying the shooter does also. They leave the handcuffed dying man face down in the grass.
I’ve said this before and I stand by it today: Police need to be retrained to shoot fleeing or assailing suspects in the legs. The “center mass” shoot to kill policy is 9/10 of the problem when it comes to these widespread killings. There was absolutely no justification for this cop to shoot the man in the back. Now all those police shootings in the past will be called in for review. Body cameras are absolutely necessary in today’s age…and I’m talking about for CITIZENS to wear!

For every Clint Eastwood there’s a Robin Williams. Some talk slow and choose their words carefully, others rattle off a million words a minute. It’s a big diverse world. Can you imagine if there were only a few species of animals as compared with the millions and counting? Rabbit, squirrel, deer, skunk, mouse…The mind is a lot like the diversity and plethora of species…it’s endless. So instead of trying to restrict the flow for everyone, reconcile, and find your own speed.
I think Katie mentioned creating a “block” feature where registered users could block someone. I think this is a smart idea that NIT engineers should consider looking into. There are many engineering features that could be added to make the overall experience on NIT more interesting and ergonomic. Matt talked about doing some things, and I think upgrading the technology user features for account holders should be a big part of any new designs. Give people the power. I’m all for it.

I think adding a “Like” button to individual comments would be nice. I think there are many people out there reading who support and agree with individual comments but who don’t take the time to comment or want to reveal themselves. I realize there are lots of neocons on this website, but I think there’s some open minds out there also passively enjoying the ride.
I also think it’s time to force a registration of some kind and disallow posting under anonymous name. IT doesn’t have to be a FB login…but it should force someone to register and create a name, without duplicate monikers being used. It saddens me that some humans are still filled with hatred and vengeance; it is a sorrowful state. Now that I’ve transcended gutteral men, I forget how bad it used to be. I live and work within gated communities, surrounded by professional people, and their civility is priceless. I drive a beat up old crappy car, which flies around the turncircles. Ferraris and Lambs sometimes pass me. I don’t mind if people have their bikes…as long as they don’t violate people’s inner peace.
It’s really windy here, but the air is warm and dry. I had a good couple days cleaning and organizing the doctor’s house. He just returned from California and he rewarded me with $120. I built him a kitchen eating counter and installed it with brackets: great space saver. He wants me to continue building it out as an L shape. I’m appreciated and loved by my new family. You know the Convenience Store really only netted me $50 a day. That’s only $1000 a month. Unbelievable.
On another note. I am brainstorming ideas to make NIT better.
First, let me say, any ideas from our loyal readers are welcomed.
Second. One idea I have is to bring in “editors” from our growing readership. People who want to contribute to NIT in some- or any -way. This could be in minor news gathering (a photo, a few sentences sent by email, just to get a story off the ground), news tips, leads for advertising, leads for new subscribers – anything that helps grow NIT readership, contributes to our daily content, and helps grow our advertising base. Not an everyday task, necessarily. Perhaps just 3-4 times a month, a contribution to NIT is made by these “editors”. Their cumulative efforts would be a real enhancement, I believe.
The question is, what would it take to bring in these types of folks? I can definitely offer a free subscription, for starters. We do have other perks, such as gift certificates to restaurants, other places. Perhaps some folks simply would enjoy making contributions. Any ideas – or interest in this – is appreciated and would be confidential. You can leave comments below or email to northiowatoday@gmail.com.

I think the character count should be set to 1500. That equals about 3 current comments in size rolled into one, minus the title/time/date/header info. I think that 1000 character limit would be just fine.
Sometimes with the 500 limit, you need to cut things out but are pretty close to what is needed to comment and express your thoughts.
Personal opinion, anything over 1000 is getting too winded and that is more like a sermon.

The 486 character limit was a good exercise and it made me a sharper writer. But I concur with the 1000. A lot of times I was on the verge of finishing a thought, and I’ve been cut off. It will help reduce the number of times you see my name in the feed. I like more in depth thoughts, and if people don’t like a writer…just skip over it. Even 750 would be better than 486. And can you make it a true number because the 14 remaining confused people. Why can’t it just say 0 remaining?
I would like to see the character limit stay at 500. If you can’t get your point(s) across in that amount of space, then maybe you should re-think your posting. Everyone knows there is ONE person on here that can’t say “hi” in 5 minutes, so if the limit was 21,000 characters, it still wouldn’t be enough for him.

Yes that is the current train of thought. 500 characters or more seems to make people skip those longer comments. So, they turn out to be a waste of time for the person writing them. Concise is (usually) better. Plus, sometimes, longer comments get lost when the writer hits the “reply” button. That can be frustrating.
I don’t think it should be increased at all. Having the limit keeps people from going on tangents and rants. Keep it short and simple. If it’s raised, Phili will keep posting 50 posts a day, they will just be longer.

Who else got new assessments on their houses from the city auditor? Seems like a scam to me. I’m just glad all the auditors have been able to stay out of jail long enough to drive around and spy on everyone’s property and decide to raise our taxes.

Of course I had sent her a letter some months ago asking her why there was such big difference from what a realtor said my house was worth and what the city had it valued at. At one time you were able to appeal the amount. Once they had our basement as being a finished basement and it wasn’t. I appealed it, and they came and checked and then it was lowered. Not sure how to go about it now. That was about 10 years ago.

If you are referring to me as being “selfish” in your comment you may be surprised to learn free speech isn’t the only issue of contention: fairness and consistency takes precedence when 100% free speech is not attainable. You are correct this is a private website, but Matt’s angle is that he is more open and fair than the Globe Gazette, so if he does have limits to topics then he and he alone should declare what those are…not you nor anyone else.
I want more free discussion than the Globe could ever stomach, but not at the cost of driving people away from the site. I’m going to elaborate on this until you fools prove to me you’re capable of understanding. Tell me what you would do to people who consumed a substance you don’t like or understand. Would you strip them of citizenship? Put them in jail? Beat and torture them? Execute them? Tell me LVS. I want to know what kind of a human being you are…whether you even are one at all. And if you would execute them, would you execute your own child if they were caught with drugs?
And if you wouldn’t imprison or execute your own child, then what gives you the right to execute or lengthily imprison someone else’s child? You see this is why the drug war is so asinine. Self professed hard asses call for tough action against other people while expecting leniency for their own. And don’t lie and tell us you’d execute your child cuz itd be a lie.
Then we might as well make robbery and murder legal too. Every civilization, culture, religion has punishment for breaking the rules yet you want to get rid of all rules.

#maybe: I don’t want to get rid of all rules. That’s absurd. I like rules that protect civilization and honor basic agreements. But I disagree with drug rules currently drafted because I feel the focus should be more on what actual harm a person causes by their drug use, rather than the act of ingesting a substance itself. I’d even be in favor of increasing penalties for other crimes if it can be shown they were under the influence. No problem with that.
Let’s take for example the guitarist David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. If David uses cocaine and then takes to the stage and performs in front of tens of thousands of people to their delight for 3 hours, why would the government concern itself with trying to prosecute him? Similarly if someone snorted some cocaine and walked around on a warm summer night enjoying the effects of the depression stripper, why should he be subject to a police shakedown and arrest?
Could it be because this society is so naturally anti-social and expectations of hostility are almost encouraged upon chance encounters with others? Just because someone is on cocaine doesn’t mean they should act like a drug crazed lunatic. Sigmund Freud did cocaine in volumes and used it for great introspection and psychotherapy. These stereotypes need to be reversed, and the behaviors of the general population need to be less suspicious and more neighborly.

People are debating marijuana becoming legalized. I have never, ever heard once from anyone other than you that saying these drugs should be legal. And I don’t need a ten page reply. And, just for the record….many years ago I tried some of these drugs. They are so extremely mind altering that it would be frightening to have people just randomly walking aroung high on coke. Just because YOU use, don’t try to sway others that it’s an acceptable lifestyle. It’s not.

Even concurring with your assertion that cocaine is dangerous and deadly, if dangerous and deadly substances are what society is watching out for, then a whole host of other substances should be immediately banned. Just as my free speech argument reasoned…if 100% free speech cannot be had, then fairness and equanimity should be applied to moderate ALL comments equally, just as we should regulate ALL substances equally, not a selective few by disproportionate measures.
And by your own admission you tried illegal substances, so why is it fair that you should experiment with an illegal substance and remain unpunished for violating the law, while others who used the same substances were arrested and received a criminal record and punishment? You were curious (as many humans are), and determined it wasn’t for you (as many humans conclude) and you moved on to live your life drug free, presumably able to enlist in the military or become a police officer

I don’t use cocaine nor meth. I did take a few puffs of marijuana while in Colorado (which I legally purchased). My discussion of the issue doesn’t mean I’m Jonesing for meth or coke, it means that I’m questioning the laws as to why these substances are made illegal while other damaging substances are not. This is direct money written out to the business from tax payer dollars. Not a peep of complaint or inquiry out of you or NIT. Why not?

But that doesn’t mean the guy working as a janitor should be locked up because he smokes cannabis when he gets off work. A really brilliant idea would be to pay for comments. That way NIT could make money and us free speech afcicianondos could pay to get our thoughts out. Subscribers get 20 free a day and nons about 3. It would encourage subscription. Set up a pay pal account or take visa,debit. Reduce non paying to 300 characters but allow paid at 10¢ for 500 and 25¢ for 1000 characters. Anyone know why they are cutting down the trees on 15th st across from Roosevelt?
I would be willing to bet the people cutting them down know why they are doing it.

A couple years ago the city contacted me and said that 1 of the trees by my house they were going to cut down because it was malformed and it would help the other trees but they never did. A couple weeks ago alliant called and said they were going to do some trimming on my trees so I would guess that it would be one of the 2.
I understand that but the whole block.
After 2 years they are finally getting around to cutting that tree of mine down.
@Maybe-Alliant will only trim around the power lines. If the tree is in the parking it belongs to the city and they will take it down if needed. I have been trying to get them to take down the tree in my parking for years and they won’t do it. They might be taking down ash trees.
What do you mean by parking? The tree that was cut down today was on the outside of my sidewalk.
@Maybe-That is the area called the “parking”. Why it is called that I don’t know. I have heard it called that ever since I was a kid. It is city property but you are responsible for maintaining it. Go figure.
Have you ever wondered why a county employee son’s is never arrested? Instead of arresting this wanted person, the county deputies tell the employee to hide his son and to call the county attorney Carlye Dalen to work out a deal! He has been on the warrant list since January 15th… but the county doesn’t care even when they know where he works and lives! This is NOT right!! He works at Culvers here in mason city and county law enforcement has told the employee that it is no big deal because its only a probation problem!
