Yesterday at 11:08 am, a woman was walking her two leashed dogs in the 300 block of 2nd Street SE.   Two dogs at large, a pit bull and a great dane, entered the area and came towards her and or her two dogs. The at large pitbull then allegedly attacked one of the woman’s dogs. The woman was bitten by the at-large pitbull on the arm and shoulder area suffering lacerations. A mail carrier was in the area and intervened quickly as the incident occurred. The mail carrier sprayed the attacking dog(s) with mace or pepper spray which repelled the at-large dogs.

The victim was treated by fire dept medics at the scene. I’m unsure at this time if she received stitches or follow up medical care.

The dogs were captured around the time of the incident by some friends of the owner. The dogs are current on rabies vaccinations and city licenses but were impounded and are in custody of animal control currently. Charges are pending against the owner.

I don’t agree that there are no vicious dogs, just vicious owners. I and my dogs were recently attacked by a dog owned by some friends of mine. The people are nice. Their dog is vicious. It attacked and bit one of my dogs and now he is lamed and suffering. The other dog, a pup being trained as a guide dog may well be tramatized to the point where he can not do his work. Thats a $40,000 dog that is now pfffft! This past weekend we were attacked while walking by another loose dog. This time i pressed charges against the dogs’ owners. I am getting sick of being attacked by dogs whose owners either don’t know or don’t care about the city’s leash laws.

@Sinner-You are correct that there are vicious dogs that are just untrainable. My neighbor across the street has one. They let the dog out without a leash and as soon as it sees another dog or person walking it attacks. These people have been turned in several times but are so dumb they keep on letting it out. If that dog ever comes in my yard when I am out I will put it down myself. If I thought I could get away with it I would put the owner down as well just because they are so stupid as to have a animal like that. Some of these idiots want to treat a dog like they are a person and they are not. They are animals and should always be treated as animals. And, I like dogs and have had many of them, but I never let them run loose where they could injure someone else or another dog.

its the owner i have a American bull terrior she plays with my lopsoopso little dog she is a lover all my neighbors love any dog can b dangerous as seen in that great dane I’ve seen poodles that would bite u that owner needs to b caged with there dods

Can you say Lhasa apso???

In addition to the dog licensing requirement, the owners should show proof of insurance so anyone damaged has a place to file a claim.

I also agree that it isn’t always the dogs fault, the owner does have something to do with it but if the dog attacks me or my grandson I will not wait till the owner gets there, my .45 will do my talking for me then I will have a chat with the owner(chat means just talking, not shooti

Sounds like your a little cocky. Why not carry wasp spray or mace? Wasp spray is the best to use it has a shooting distance father than mace.

Sprays are great untill the wind blows them back in your face. Don’t bet your life on a spray.

Wrong. Wasp spray is a splirt not a spray. Trust me it wont come back at you.

Also, more women are turning to wasp spray for protection it packs a punch.

Alittle cocky huh, well wasp spray will work on a dog but a human will see it coming and move so I carry something that will work in any situation.

Seems that you misunderstood the CC law here in Iowa!
But,
Something tells me that you just ignored it.
Good Luck!

since you are the expert then explain it to me since I have been carrying for over 30 years maybe you are smarter than me.

@Blah,
Please do explain how they misunderstood the Permit to Carry, because in Iowa they can no longer make you carry concealed, we are issued permits to carry, pistols, rifles, shotguns, I myself have my permit to carry and always carry concealed as to hide it and not let someone know, as for shooting a dog that is attacking you or your pet you are fully justified, fear of life would be what that is called, now if you happened to miss and hit someones house or someone, then you can be held accountable for that, but a well placed shot when an animal is on top of you is not hard to do, drive your weapon in their rib cage and squeeze the trigger, simple, and FYI, mace is not always a deterrent for dogs or animals, I was a Military Working Dog handler, and I can attest that it pisses them off even more and they engage in the fight a little harder most times.

@ maybe, don’t waste your time…this is another ignorant individual that thinks they know something about CCW when they don’t know anything about it because they don’t have one. A know it all that has their opinion that is flawed. Too lazy to research the law but eager enough to open their mouth and talk like they know something.

she was lucky the mail carrier was there

Like I said’ Ban Irresponsible pet owners! I don’t like how this article and the one before this one is written always aiming at the dogs who attack. Why not report in a way of how clueless the owners are! We have leaders and especially around here who like to enforce laws which only jeopardizes your pets. Use your common sense when you start your enforcing a law. How about we enforce privacy fences.
Please get off the ‘vicious animal’ reporting, there is NO SUCH THING AS A VICIOUS DOG. VICIOUS OWNERS is more like it.

Exactly! And also if Animal Control would actually follow up on calls & hold pet owners accountable, this could all be prevented.

I stand corrected, your right about the owners responsibility. There are people out there that intentionally make their dogs vicious, then there are some dogs that (could) be vicious by nature. Some people should not have pets.

Why can’t we be safe walking the streets of this town. Any dog that does this without being provoked, needs to be put down. Imagine this happening to your children.
