MASON CITY — A Mason City man accused of strangling and injuring a domestic partner during a potentially violent incident involving a child is being held without bond as he faces a felony and two additional criminal charges.
Mason City police were dispatched at approximately 8:33 p.m. on July 12, 2026, to a reported physical domestic disturbance at 415 N. Adams Ave.
Following an investigation, officers arrested Antonio Alejandro Perez, 29, on allegations of domestic abuse assault impeding air or blood flow and causing bodily injury, child endangerment and false imprisonment.
Perez (pictured at top) was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail at 12:26 a.m. on July 13.
Court records show prosecutors filed three criminal complaints against Perez in Cerro Gordo County District Court under case number FECR035082.
The most serious charge alleges Perez committed domestic abuse assault by impeding another person’s normal breathing or blood circulation and causing bodily injury. The offense is charged as a Class D felony, which carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine under Iowa law.
Perez is also charged with child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor. The charge generally alleges a person responsible for a child knowingly acted in a manner creating a substantial risk to the child’s physical, mental or emotional health or safety. A conviction can result in up to two years of incarceration and a fine.
The false imprisonment charge is a serious misdemeanor. Under Iowa law, false imprisonment involves intentionally confining another person against that person’s will without a reasonable belief of legal authority. A conviction is punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine.
Perez made his initial court appearance July 13 before Magistrate Ronald James Wagenaar. The court ordered him held without bond and scheduled a preliminary hearing for 1:15 p.m. on July 23.
A no-contact order was also issued and served upon Perez. The publicly available filing summary does not identify the protected party.
The case has not reached a disposition, and no plea or trial date was listed in the available court filings.
Perez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
