Charles City bicyclist airlifted after pickup truck collision

CHARLES CITY — A Charles City man suffered serious injuries Monday after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a pickup truck east of town.

The crash happened at approximately 11:12 a.m. on July 13 at the intersection of 220th Street and Walnut Avenue in Floyd County.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2018 Ford F-150 driven by 79-year-old Robert Leon Mehmen of Charles City was traveling eastbound when it collided with an eastbound bicycle ridden by 77-year-old Robert Joseph Krueger, also of Charles City.

Krueger suffered serious injuries and was airlifted by MercyOne AirMed to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the collision, and the crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, Charles City Fire Department, AMR and S and T Towing assisted at the scene.
