MASON CITY — Mason City Parks & Recreation and students from John Adams Middle School are teaming up to breathe new life into the Fredrick Hanford Softball Complex through a hands-on mural and beautification project. The joint initiative will take place on the morning of April 30, 2025.
Under the guidance of their teachers, students have been designing, crafting, and preparing colorful mural pieces to install on the aging concession and restroom building. The project includes large-scale wood murals shaped like a softball, puzzle pieces, and custom lettering — all created and painted by the students themselves.

“We’re thrilled to partner with our local schools and give students the opportunity to take pride in their community spaces,” said Brian Pauly, Superintendent of Recreation. “This project is about more than aesthetics — it’s about giving youth a sense of ownership and connection to the parks their parents use and love.”
To make the most of their time outdoors, the students will also participate in games of softball and kickball while others take turns installing mural components.
Teachers like Mrs. Sutcliffe, Mrs. Hansen, and city staff Dennis Westendorf, Linda Hunt, Meriel Johnson have played an integral role in planning and coordinating the effort, and students like Keira Billings and Indica Levad have helped lead the creative direction and construction.
This collaboration is part of a broader vision to update and reenergize the Fredrick Hanford Complex concession stand, turning the dated concession building into a vibrant focal point that welcomes all park visitors.
