NORTHWOOD — Douglas Vance Helgeland, 78, of Northwood, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Avenue South in Northwood. A prayer service will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Known to many as Doug, Helgeland built a meaningful life around those he loved and the Northwood community he proudly called home. His presence was familiar to friends, neighbors and community members, and his willingness to serve reflected the genuine concern he held for the place where he lived.
Doug spent time serving the people of Northwood as a member of the Northwood City Council. His years at the council table demonstrated his commitment to his neighbors and his desire to help guide and strengthen the community.
Away from public service, Doug treasured the relationships he shared with his family. Those closest to him will remember the love, guidance and steady companionship he provided throughout his life.
His passing leaves behind sadness for those who knew him best, but also an enduring collection of memories created through family gatherings, friendships and years of service to others.
Doug’s legacy will live on through his loved ones and through the Northwood community he helped serve.
