TERRIL — Gail E. Handy, 86, of Terril, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He leaves behind a legacy built on hard work, devotion to his loved ones and a lifelong passion for the outdoors.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at the Lakes Area Senior Center, 2101 Zenith Ave., Spirit Lake.
Born April 4, 1940, in Spencer to Frank and Gladys Handy, Gail spent his childhood in southern Iowa before eventually returning to the Spencer area, where he established the life and family he cherished.
Known for his strong work ethic, Gail spent much of his career working with H&S Roofing in a variety of roles. Friends and coworkers respected his dedication, dependability and willingness to work hard, qualities that remained with him throughout his life.
Away from work, Gail found his greatest joy outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and his love for coon dogs led him to operate Handy’s Moonshine Kennels, where he combined his enthusiasm for hunting with his appreciation for raising and training exceptional dogs. Whether he was in the woods, on the water or spending time with his beloved hounds, Gail was truly in his element.
Above all else, Gail treasured his family. Time spent with his children, grandchildren and the generations that followed meant more to him than anything else. His love, guidance and unwavering support created memories that will continue to be cherished by those fortunate enough to know him.
He is remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend and outdoorsman whose kindness and quiet strength touched countless lives.
