MASON CITY – Kara Vogelson, MHA, CPH, Organizational Development and Research Service Manager with the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public was named one of the 2018 Iowa Public Health Heroes by the University of Iowa. Kara is one of three individuals to receive this award. The award is designed to recognize public health practitioners who have worked to promote a healthier state through wellness and disease prevention initiatives. They must demonstrate and exemplify the values of the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health, including community engagement, integrity, continued learning, quality, responsibility, and social justice.

“These three award recipients have dedicated their careers to protecting, improving, and advocating for the health of Iowans,” says Edith Parker, dean of the College of Public Health. “The college is proud to recognize their outstanding service and achievements.”

Kara was nominated for her drive for and commitment to public health. She has written hundreds of grant applications, created programming, facilitated strategic planning sessions, developed Community Health Needs Assessments/Health Improvement Plans (CHNA/HIP), conducted trainings, and mentored staff and students. Recently, she organized and initiated the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health’s process to become accredited with the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The Department was the second in the state of Iowa to achieve accreditation. She continues to serve on boards, commissions, and committees locally and statewide. In each of her positions, she maintains a committed focus and dedication to helping people live longer and healthier lives. Kara has been an unselfish leader seeking ways to promote a healthier community through planning, collaboration and innovation.

“Kara is one of the driving forces behind our Health Department’s success,” said Ron Osterholm, Health Director for the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “Her leadership through strategic planning, integrated management, quality improvement, and much more has made our department a leader in public health for the state of Iowa. She recently led us through the Public Health Accreditation process, making us only the second Health Department in Iowa to achieve this status.”
