CORALVILLE — An Iowa inmate whose sentence began nearly 34 years ago died last week in a prison hospice unit, state corrections officials announced.
Gregory Dean Conner, 77, died at 4:04 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville.
Conner was serving a sentence for crimes committed in Linn County. His sentence began Aug. 18, 1992.
The Iowa Department of Corrections did not disclose Conner’s crimes, the length of his sentence or whether he had remained continuously incarcerated since 1992.
Officials also did not release information about Conner’s medical condition or specify a cause of death. The department’s announcement stated only that he died on the institution’s hospice unit.
The Iowa Medical and Classification Center houses inmates requiring medical care and also serves as the primary reception and classification center for Iowa’s prison system.
No additional information was immediately released.
