KENSETT — Roger Dale Clagett, 99, of Kensett, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, concluding a life marked by steadfast faith, devotion to family and decades of service to his community.
Funeral service arrangements are pending. Roger will be laid to rest at Kensett Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Roger’s family.
Roger was born Jan. 17, 1927, on a farm in Mower County, Minnesota, to Roy and Marie (Jaspers) Clagett. During his childhood, the family moved to a farm near Bolan before a devastating house fire forced another move to a farm near Kensett, where Roger spent the rest of his youth.
He attended a one-room country school before graduating from Kensett High School in 1945. His school years were filled with activity and friendship as he played basketball and baseball, performed with the high school band on the tuba, enjoyed singing and took part in numerous school and community events.
After graduation, Roger returned to the family farm to work alongside his father. On Saturday evenings, he often headed to area dance halls, especially the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. It was there he met the love of his life, Lavonne Aves.
Roger and Lavonne were married on May 9, 1948, beginning a remarkable marriage that spanned 74 years. Together they built a life rooted in love, hard work and family, raising two children, Wendy and Steven.
Faith was a guiding force throughout Roger’s life. As a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church, he generously shared his time and talents, serving in numerous leadership positions and singing in the church choir for more than 60 years. His familiar voice became a cherished part of worship for generations of fellow church members.
Roger also enjoyed entertaining others, participating in the Kensett Variety Show on many occasions and bringing his enthusiasm and good nature to community events.
His commitment to the community extended well beyond the church. Roger served for nine years on the St. Ansgar School Board, helping guide the education of local students, and also served on the Grafton Elevator Board. He was a longtime member of the Worth County Saddle Club and looked forward to Sunday trail rides, combining his love of horses with the friendships he treasured.
Those who knew Roger remember a man who valued faith, family and fellowship above all else. Whether lending a hand, sharing a song or enjoying the outdoors with friends, he embraced life with quiet humility and genuine kindness.
Roger is survived by his son, Steve Clagett of Northwood; his grandchildren, Joe (Greta) Kochevar of Ashland, Wisconsin, Dave Kochevar of Alaska, Tom (Mel) Clagett of Northwood and Reid Clagett of Nashville, Tennessee; his great-grandchildren, Moura and Lars Kochevar, and Audrey and Graham Clagett; along with many other relatives and friends who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lavonne; his daughter, Wendy Kochevar; son-in-law, Marty Kochevar; daughter-in-law, Mary Clagett; his two brothers; and his parents.
Roger’s nearly century-long life reflected the values that define many rural Iowa families — faith, perseverance, generosity and love. His legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the church he faithfully served and the community he helped strengthen over so many years.
