State Patrol update related on May 26th collision that claimed life of Iowan

logo-iowa-state-patrolPolk County, IOWA — Due to inaccurate information previously released publicly regarding the collision described below, State Patrol officials are releasing a summary and status of the following collision.

On Sunday, May 26th, 2013 at approximately 4:09 AM a collision occurred at approximately the 138.5 mile marker east bound on Interstate 80 in Polk County. Unit #1 was a brown 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix that was driven by a Jorge Santoyo Alamilla, age 26. Unit #2 was a red 2012 Freightliner Semi, which was pulling a white van trailer, driven by a Leroy Hunter, age 58.

Unit #2 was in the far inside lane (left lane) traveling the posted speed limit. Unit #1 came in behind Unit #2 and collided with the rear D.O.T. bumper on the trailer of Unit #2. Once the collision occurred, Unit #1 came to a rest in the middle and inside lane. Unit #2 came to a stop on the inside shoulder.

**Secondary Collision** Once Unit #1 came to a rest within the traveled portion, the inside and middle lanes. Another vehicle, Unit # 3, driven by: Abby Leann Grull, age 32, was unable to see it stopped in the travel portion of the roadway. Unit #1 was not displaying lights following the initial collision. As a result, Grull was unable to observe it in time to avoid a collision. Unit # 3, Grull was not injured as a result of the secondary collision.

Almailla (driver Unit #1) was transported to the hospital and then later pronounced dead. Hunter, (driver of Unit # 2) was not injured.

The collision remains under investigation. No charges have been filed to date.
