DETROIT, MI – Investors were told today by Ford Motor Company’s CEO that all small car production is heading to Mexico.
It has now been widely reported that Mark Fields, Ford CEO, told a group of investors Wednesday that in order to cut costs in a slowing auto sales recovery, his company will migrate production of smaller cars to Mexico.
In the near-term, Fields said “We will have migrated all of our small-car production to Mexico and out of the United States.”
The move may take a few years to complete.
Earlier this year, Ford tipped its hand that this move was coming, when it announced a $1.6 billion investment in Mexico – to ramp up small car production there. CBS News reported in April that “starting in 2018, production of smaller Fords will move from the Wayne, Michigan plant to San Luis Potosi state in Mexico.”
When that announcement was made, CEO Fields said “We are a global, multinational company and we will invest to keep us competitive and we will do what makes sense for the business.”
Reaction has been swift this morning, as the company is now enduring a backlash on its social media pages. One person said “NO MORE FORDS in this family. You move your production to Mexico….. you will be DONE!!! Sad, sad day!”
Another person wrote “Mexico? Hope you go out of Business.”
