Neil was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, to Cecil “Jim” Shultz and Loretta “Pat” Hohenfield. He graduated from Mason City High School and later from NIACC. After completing his education, Neil began his lifelong career as a carpenter. He worked for Ken Petersen Builders and Minnesota Rubber, and later retired from North Iowa Area Community Action in June 2014. Neil was known for his craftsmanship and keen eye for detail.

On July 5, 1979, Neil married Sue Conrad. The two had been together for years before deciding it was time to make it official. They spent the rest of their lives happily together, raising a family and building a life filled with love.

Neil took great pride in being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. One of his greatest passions was going fishing. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Before his accident, Neil enjoyed riding motorcycles. He also loved taking his Ford Galaxie to car shows with his grandchildren. He had a soft spot for Reese’s peanut butter cups, Christmas sugar cookies, and Kimberly’s famous lasagna.
