Pavilion Will Replace Shelter House #1 in East Park. Is This Necessary?

The Mason City Parks and Recreation Board has approved the tear-down of shelter house #1 (and sources tell us more than a few trees) for the construction of a music pavilion. The vote was 3-2 in favor. Shelter house #1 is just west of the existing band shell in East Park.

Park Board members Frank Pearson and Carl Grover questioned the space and flood zone of East Park, and some constituents have voiced their concerns with this location.

Since there is already a band shell in East Park, one may wonder “Why do we need another place for small concerts?” Another question is “Do we need to tear down the shelter house (and trees) to do this?” Another obvious question is “Wouldn’t a better place for this pavillion be where the ‘deer pen’ is located?” Or, “how about the flooding issues?”

NorthIowaToday.com attempted to reach Carl Grover and Frank Pearson (who both voted ‘no’ on the pavillion project) for interviews but was unable to reach them. If you have an opinion on this matter, please leave a comment below.
