MASON CITY – A man was detained at Fleet Farm for shoplifting this week.
Duane Joseph Whitney, age 32, unknown address, was detained at Fleet Farm in Mason City on Wednesday at just after 2:30 PM for shoplifting.
Whitney was arrested and charged with 5th degree theft. He was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail. It appeared that Whitney was out of jail on Thursday but no records indicated if he had posted bond.
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.
The people who write bad checks cost everyone a lot of money as well. It really irritates me that people who steal items valued under $200 get prosecuted for shoplifting, but if they write a bad check for under $200, the police will do nothing about it. Businesses are on their own to try to collect it. They did away with the North Iowa Dispute Center, which did a great job of collecting bad checks. These deadbeats need to pay the pipers.
These losers cost us all a lot of money regarding retail prices. Some are not caught, some are and go off free and never pay restitution.
The retailer has a huge cost for loss prevention and loss of restitution is a big problem as well. This raised the cost of everything in all stores.
