Pedestrian and bike trail over halfway finished in Cerro Gordo county

CERRO GORDO COUNTY – If you are looking for a new place to ride your bike or take a walk, that place is the Prairie Land trail, where Cerro Gordo County Conservation has completed 11-miles of a planned 21-mile trail, according to Mike Webb, Cerro Gordo County Conservation. The completed portion of the trail goes from 240th street in Mason City (SW corner of Mason City) to Jonquil Avenue (SW of Swaledale). The trail surface is compacted limestone which provides a smooth and durable surface. Parking areas have been created at 240th street in Mason City and in Swaledale on 150th street (B60).

Several areas of native prairie can be observed along the route. The prairie vegetation provides everchanging views as the prairie flowers progress through the season. Other interesting features found along the trail are the views from the bridge crossing Beaver Dam Creek south of Burchinal and the bridge crossing Beaver Creek south of Swaledale.

Cerro Gordo County Conservation is continuing to work on completing the final 10 miles of trail. A 3-mile section from Swaledale to Thornton is scheduled for completion in the Fall of 2022. Remember the trail is a recreational trail for biking and hiking. Motorized vehicles, except for authorized maintenance vehicles, and horses are prohibited.

every taxpayers money spent for just a few people, go look at the trail from mason to clear lake during the summer, if your lucky there might be 4 to 5 people on it

I drive between Clear Lake and Mason City almost daily…. that trail is used by lots of people in the summer. You just need something to complain about so you bitch about things you can’t do, either you’re too fat or too lazy to ride a bike and get exercise

I use that little road to avoid traffic on the highway, just wish that people would walk in the grass, costs lots of money to wash blood and guts off my bumper all the time.

Stupid walkers

It’s one thing to build a trail and another to maintain it. There is a walking/biking path from the high school to Eastbrooke that doesn’t look like its been touched since it was built. Oh but that’s ok. Need to put all that money into a school that is losing students every year.

Thank you Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board for the hard work in starting this trail and continuing with additions. This trail will provide hours of fun for locals and some not so locals for years to come.
