MASON CITY – Two young women were injured and an elderly woman was killed in a two car accident Tuesday afternoon south of Mason City.
Carol Koenen, 82, of Latimer, Iowa was killed and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, near 190th Street and Olive Avenue.
Injured were Rebecca Smith, 20, and Katelynn Smith, 17, both of Hampton. Both were transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Hampton.
According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Koenen was driving eastbound on 190th Street at about 4:00 PM and was turning northbound onto Olive Avenue when she failed to yield to a vehicle driven by Rebecca Smith. Smith’s vehicle was sent into the ditch and Koenen’s vehicle was spun around and came to rest facing west bound on 190th Street.
Koenen was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the report, while the two injured women were using seatbelts.
