FORT DODGE — A barrage of gunfire outside a Fort Dodge bar left a 27-year-old man dead and two other men riddled with or struck by bullets, while the accused gunman allegedly opened fire on a police officer before making a run for it.

Fort Dodge police on Tuesday identified Derrick L. Stewart, 27, of Fort Dodge as the man killed in the September 26 shooting in the 300 block of South 4th Street.

Stewart suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died from his injuries, police said.

Two other Fort Dodge men were shot.

Jayvion A. Wilson, 21, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized. Police said Monday that Wilson was in stable condition.

Laquwon A. Moore, 29, suffered a single gunshot wound. He was treated and released.

Police have arrested Jamarcus L. Gully (pictured at top), 20, of Fort Dodge and charged him with first-degree murder, attempted murder of a peace officer and two counts of attempted murder.

The first-degree murder charge is a class A felony. The three attempted-murder charges are class B felonies.

The deadly encounter unfolded at approximately 12:29 a.m. Saturday, September 26, near the 4th Street Depot at 300 South 4th Street.

According to Fort Dodge police, an officer arrived while an altercation was underway and encountered an alleged gunman actively firing rounds from a handgun as multiple people were suffering from gunshot wounds.

The situation then escalated into an exchange of gunfire involving the officer.

Police said the officer fired at the alleged gunman. Authorities allege Gully also fired at the officer before fleeing into the 4th Street Depot.

The officer pursued him.

Webster County Sheriff’s deputies responding to the mayhem soon located Gully in the 400 block of 3rd Avenue South and took him into custody.

The police officer was not injured.

Officers at the scene immediately began providing medical treatment to the shooting victims until Fort Dodge Fire Department personnel arrived. The wounded were transported to UnityPoint Health-Trinity Regional Medical Center.

The officer who fired his weapon was placed on critical incident leave in accordance with Fort Dodge Police Department policy.

Because an officer discharged a weapon during the confrontation, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is involved in the investigation.

Police initially withheld the victims’ identities while authorities worked to notify their families. Fort Dodge police announced Monday that those notifications had been completed and publicly identified Stewart, Wilson and Moore.

The homicide comes amid a string of serious gun violence investigated in Fort Dodge.

NIT reported just last month that prosecutors declined to charge a Fort Dodge resident who fatally shot a man after authorities determined the resident had retreated from an attack into his own home and acted in self-defense:

Fort Dodge was also rocked by another murder case in September 2025, when a man was found shot dead outside an apartment building and police quickly arrested a suspect on a first-degree murder charge:

NIT has documented numerous other shootings in the community, including a 2024 case in which a man’s body was discovered in a ditch and two suspects were eventually arrested:

The Fort Dodge Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continue to investigate the September 26 homicide and officer-involved shooting.

Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The Fort Dodge Police Department has been assisted by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Webster County Attorney’s Office.

Gully is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
