College Football: UNI to face South Dakota State

CEDAR FALLS – Sixth-ranked UNI Football advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs with a dominating defensive performance against San Diego in the first round of the playoffs. The Panthers advance to face South Dakota State for the second time in less than a month. The Jackrabbits topped the Panthers 38-7 on Nov. 16, UNI’s only loss since early October. SDSU had a bye week to prepare for the game after receiving the bye. The winner of the game will face the winner of the James Madison-Monmouth game.

• The first-round game started with an interception returned for a touchdown by defensive end Brawntae Wells on Toreros’ first drive. The game was a defensive slugfest and the Panthers picked up 9.0 tackles for loss and four takeaways in the win. It was the first time that USD was held to just three points since the 2017 season.

•UNI is making its 21st Playoff Appearance and the fifth in six seasons. The Panthers have the second most playoff appearances of all time behind Montana and head coach Mark Farley has the most playoff wins among active FCS head coaches and the fourth-most all-time (16). UNI is now 20-5 all-time in the playoffs in the UNI-dome after defeating San Diego.

• The win over Southern Utah was Head coach Mark Farley‘s 150th career victory.  He is the winningest coach in UNI and Missouri Valley Football History and the 10th coach in FCS history with 150 FCS victories. The win against Illinois State was his 99th Missouri Valley Football/Gateway Conference win.

• UNI is 11th in the FCS in total defense, 10th in scoring defense, 29th in tackles for loss and 16th in sacks. After five games with three or more turnovers, the Panthers are now 4th in the FCS and first in the MVFC in turnovers gained.

• Isaiah Weston and Chris Kolarevic are building resumes for comeback player of the year honors. Weston missed all of last season and through 10 games sits atop the MVFC in receiving TDs and atop the FCS in yards per catch. Kolarevic has played in just nine games, but is third on the team in total tackles and earned a pair of MVFC Player of the Week honors.
