The unintended consequences are that people in chronic pain, who rely on these meds and who are lawful, are being thrown under the bus. They are being denied meds that have worked for years & are left in horrible pain. The CDC just came out and admitted that it skewed data to make it look like chronic pain pts were the issue. Ppl like Andrew Kolodny have started this so him and his comrades can make $$$$! Off treatments that don’t work(suboxone/alternative meds). The problem is the illegal fentanyl coming over the border. Before you celebrated this, do some research and think: if you have to have surgery, do you want pain meds or not? You will not get them if this keeps going this way.

The city needs to wake up. Anyone buying property should have a time limit to fix the property up and be occupied and keep it clean.
Look at all the homes also bought and sitting empty. Drive around town. This town is a disgrace; not a good first impression for someone looking to relocate. The north end still is in shambles. Trash and junk in the yards and on the porches, lawns destroyed. Southport empty. Our mall pretty much gone. Good luck bringing the town back. We’re losing more retail all the time. Central Heights is gravel roads, like living in the country. Our tax money being wasted on the worthless mall that should be torn down.
Mayor, city council, look around. Do something to make Mason City a beautiful place to live…
…..but we have a pretty new hockey arena going up.

The City Council of the City of Mason City, Iowa, met in regular session pursuant to law and rules of said Council, in the Mason City Room of the Mason City Public Library, at 7:00 P.M., on April 16, 2019. The meeting was called to order by the Mayor and on roll being called there were present, Paul Adams, Mayor Pro tem in the Chair, and the following Council Members: Adams, Thoma, Jaszewski, Masson, Symonds, Lee. Absent: Schickel.
Adopt Agenda: Motion, Masson; 2nd, Symonds that the agenda be adopted. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
The Mayor Pro tem proclaimed April 26, 2019 as “Arbor Day” and April 25, 2019 as “National Get on Board Day”.
City Administrator Burnett presented his Monthly Activity Report. Council comments and questions followed.

Discussion followed regarding when the roof would come off and what the change orders were for. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
FY20 State and Federal Transit Administration Assistance Funding: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor Pro tem called for comments and objections which were noted.The Mayor Pro tem asked if there had been any written objections with Administrator Burnett stating there had not. There being no further comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Masson; 2nd, Symonds that the Resolution No. 19-91, authorizing application for State Transit Assistance Funds and Federal Funds for Urbanized Areas for financial assistance and commitment of City funds for Mason City Transit System, be adopted. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
IEDA – East Old Garfield School Neighborhood Owner-Occupied Housing Rehab: The Mayor Pro tem asked if there had been any written objections with Administrator Burnett stating there had not. The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor Pro tem called for comments and objections. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Lee; 2nd, Jaszewski that the Resolution No. 19-92, authorizing submission of a 2019 Housing Fund Application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) for the East Old Garfield School Neighborhood Owner-Occupied Housing Rehabilitation Program; affirming commitment for local match funds; and authorizing execution of grant agreement upon application approval, be adopted. Discussion followed regarding the Hoover area and similar programs, grant disbursement, qualification requirements, etc. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
2019 Pavement Marking Program: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor Pro tem called for comments and objections and asked if there had been any written objections with Administrator Burnett stating there had not. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Jaszewski; 2nd, Lee that Resolution No.’s 19-95 adopting plans, specifications, form of contract and estimated cost for the “Mason City Multi-Purpose Arena – Bid Package #3 (Interior Fit-Up, Mechanical, Electrical, Elevator, and Exterior Improvements)”, and 19-96, making award of contract to Dean Snyder Construction of Clear Lake, Iowa for the “Mason City Multi-Purpose Arena – Bid Package #3 (Interior Fit-Up, Mechanical, Electrical, Elevator, and Exterior Improvements)be adopted and the bid tabulation with recommended bid from Dean Snyder Construction of Clear Lake, Iowa in the amount of $8,249,000.00, accepted. Purchase, Sale and Development Agreement, Talon, LLC: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor Pro tem called for comments and objections and asked if there had been any written objections with Administrator Burnett stating he had one objection filed by Jim Marinos on the project, advising it was not a written objection, but he did receive it by email and believed it was passed out to the Council. There being no further comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Lee; 2nd, Masson that Resolution No.19-97, making final determination on potential sale of interest in real property and approving and authorizing execution of a purchase, sale and development agreement by and between the City of Mason City and Talon, LLC, be adopted. Discussion followed regarding the project, the inventory of certain housing, competition, the design, etc.: AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Amendment #2 – Mason City Downtown Revitalization Urban Renewal Plan: The public hearing was held as per published notice and the Mayor Pro tem called for comments and objections and asked if there had been any written objections with Administrator Burnett stating there had not. There being no comments the public hearing was declared closed. Motion, Jaszewski; 2nd, Thoma that Resolution No.19-98, determining an area of the City to be blighted and economic development area, and that the rehabilitation, conservation, redevelopment, development, or a combination thereof, of such area is necessary in the interest of the public health, safety or welfare of the residents of the City; designating such area as appropriate for Urban Renewal Projects; and adopting Amendment No. 2 to the Mason City Downtown Reinvestment Urban Renewal Plan, be adopted. AYES: All (Motion carried.)
Change of Zone: Z2 Sub-Urban to Z3 General Urban District for property generally located at 1602 4th Street SW. The Mayor Pro tem asked for a motion and seconded that the ordinance changing the boundaries of certain districts therein zone Z2 Sub-Urban to Z3 General Urban District for property generally located at 1602 4th Street SW item be received and placed on file for first consideration. The Mayor Pro tem announced the item died for a lack of a motion.

You put your money in Retail. But now Retail is faltering left and right, leaving vacant storefronts and a half empty mall.
You coddle polluters, ignoring their illegal dumps in direct violation of City code. So the State DNR had to come in and cease their operations.
You allow commercial activity in residential properties, oblivious to its operations, and potential pollution. So again, the State DNR has to be called in.
Exactly where is the City Leadership in Mason City? Are they acting for the good of its citizens, or for the few who wield influence?
Where was the City Leadership when residents needed their properties protected from a few looking to exploit our neighborhoods, debasing our property values?
Abandoned buildings are beginning to sprout up like dandelions in Spring. All we get from City Leadership is “we are working on it”, but nothing is said concrete. In the meantime, squatters invade those buildings.
City Leadership unrealistically thinks, that a River-walk in Mason City can somehow eclipse the billion dollar district in San Antonio.
Statues downtown will not solve the problems we have. To believe they could have any impact on the reasons Mason City continues to lose population, is nonsensical. Yet City Leadership still gives the project tax revenues and support.
City Leadership proposes to increase its support of an entity by $23,000 this year, when it has shown no meaningful results in so many years past.
City Leadership proposes a new apartment complex south of the almost dormant mall, targeted to those who make more than the median income. Yet, there are not the jobs in the community that would provide that kind of income. Just who will rent those apartments given the population is shrinking?
Leadership in our community should focus on ALL the citizens who live here, not just those who they rub elbows with, and open their pocketbooks for another election cycle…….
Just so you know… in today’s internet world not all jobs are 9-5 factory jobs. But go ahead and live in the past if it makes you feel more secure. lol

If you consider Russian election interference a crisis for our democracy, then you cannot read the Mueller report, adding it to the available public evidence, and conclude anything other than Barack Obama spectacularly failed America. Subsequent investigations of this matter should explore how and why Obama’s White House failed, and whether they invented the collusion narrative to cover up those failures.

Linda McCann will be presenting her book Prisoners of War in Iowa. Iowa had about 25,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners of war live and work here between 1943 and 1946. There were two main camps at Algona and Clarinda, and also about 17 branch camps where the POWs did short-term work. She will share memories of people who worked with the prisoners or got to know them.

Good grief you are so misinformed. Prayer is not “outlawed” in schools. Forced prayer is against the law. Most schools in this state have Christian groups that meet in the school and do pray. A school can’t force anyone to join the group or require all students to participate in a group prayer. Oregon’s law is regarding personal choice in that it clarifies the means someone who is terminally ill can end his or her own life. If you want us to go back to the 10 Commandments as the basis of our law, the President is in big trouble.
You better go back and look at what is being proposed and do it real slow so you can understand it.

“Christian-Muslim” violence?? I think the writer meant, Muslim violence against Christians because it looks to me as though Christians are being slaughtered on a daily basis by the radical Muslim horde and there is no retribution. Is the author a Muslim or just simple minded?
