MASON CITY – For the first time, North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is offering a 45–hour, non-credit basic machining course. This course will provide participants with the skills necessary for entry level machinist positions.
“Manufacturing today is an efficient, high-tech operation and machinists are a vital part of the industry,” said Terry Schumaker, NIACC Dean of Continuing Education and Economic Development.
With an expected growth of 17% by 2020, machining is a growing career pathway for those interested in hands-on, focused work.
“This is another option for those interested in a career in basic machining to quickly get the skills they need to get a good job,” Schumaker said. “There are a lot of companies in North Iowa that need skilled workers such as machinists.”
NIACC’s 45 hour non-credit Basic Machining Course will provide participants with the skills necessary for safe operation of manual mills and lathes. This hands-on project centered course instructs the participants to properly use hand tools, precision measuring equipment, drills, manual lathes and mills.
Participants will also complete the National Career Readiness Certificate and Career Ready 101 to certify their skills for employment.
This course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays October 7-November 6. All classes meet on the NIACC campus from 5:00- 9:00 p.m. in the Buettner Careers Building, room 164. For more information and to register, call the NIACC Continuing Education Division at 1-641-422-4358. Course #94145.
