Sex offender charged with violating probation for second time since June

MASON CITY – He lost a foot race with cops last weekend, after allegedly spending time alone with two young boys in his garage, this sex offender, now authorities say he violated his probation in a theft case for a second time.

Mark Monroe Hoffman, age 53, is a convicted sex offender who lives across the street from two Mason City schools. He is in jail Wednesday night after a warrant was issued for his arrest for a probation violation in a third degree theft case in which he pled guilty in April. In June, Hoffman was charged with violating his two-year probation term and found guilty on August 29. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and does not appear to have served any of that sentence yet. He is now in jail on the second violation, held on $2,000 bond.

This past weekend, police went to Hoffman’s house at 115 16th Street SW.  He was spotted, and a foot chase ensued.  He was soon caught and taken to jail, charged with violating the sex offender registry, three counts of violating the no-contact order and interference with official acts.

Police say Hoffman was alone in his garage with two young boys that day.

Jaime Lynn Peterson, age 31, was at the residence with her children, Sheriff Kevin Pals said Monday.  After an investigation, Peterson was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment by leaving her three-year-old son and five-year-old son alone in the garage with Hoffman.
