MASON CITY – A generous deputy allowed a dangerous, impaired driver to continue on after a traffic stop.
According to records, a Cerro Gordo deputy stopped a female driver for “erratic driving” on Thursday evening at 4th Street SW and Grover Avenue. The woman told the deputy that “she had participated in a sleep study the night before and was very tired.”
The woman, 56-year-old Linda Casey, was allowed to proceed and given a warning.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses. Sleep deprivation and fatigue make lapses of attention more likely to occur, and may play a role in behavior that can lead to crashes attributed to other causes.
Few states have laws dealing directly with “drowsy driving.” Arkansas, California, New Jersey are among them, while other states have laws in the pipeline that are being considered.

A society that doesn’t account for the basics (like the need for sleep) is an unrealistic one. Schiphol airport in Amsterdam provides loungers that you can sleep in. Contrast that with Amerikkka’s penitentiary iron maiden wrought iron “arm rest” bars that prevent sleeping in a bus or train depot, and you’ll inevitably end up with tired bodies sleeping on the floor. What in the hell do they expect people to do with 48 hour bus rides and layovers? America is so punitive to its people.
I think that the safe thing to do here would be to call someone and have them come and get her. If she was drowsy, what makes u think she will get home alright and not hurt herself in an accident or someone else. No disrespect, but the Deputy wasn’t thinking..
I have a feeling she was wide awake after being stopped. I sure would be. Still, it’s a questionable decision by the officer.
In Canada they will arrest you and take you to jail for sleepy driving. They will even arrest you if they catch you sleeping on the side of the road. They say it is because you must have been sleep impaired before you stopped.
cop should be reprimanded.
