DES MOINES – The National weather service in Des Moines has issued a fire weather watch for the North Iowa area.
“Critical fire weather expected on Thursday in far Northern Iowa,” says the report.
Low humidity and dry conditions, coupled with strong southwest winds (15-25 mph), is the recipe for the watch.
The watch will be in effect from Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening.
The report says the “fuel” could be the drying of grasses as well as field crops which is underway and ahead of schedule. It also says that any fires that start will spread rapidly.
A warning may be issued if conditions continue to deteriorate.
