Charles City woman driver crashes into elderly driver’s stopped vehicle, causing thousands in damages

CHARLES CITY – A woman driver in Charles City failed miserably while making a left turn, slamming into an elderly man’s luxury vehicle, resulting in thousands in damages and at least two traffic tickets.

The Charles City Police Department investigated a two-vehicle accident on Saturday, October 12, 2025, at approximately 1:34 PM, at the intersection of 3rd Street and Allison Street. The collision occurred when a maroon 2017 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by 28-year-old Kierstine Heim of Charles City, was traveling southbound and attempting to make a left turn from Allison Street onto 3rd Street. According to the police report, Heim struck a silver 2011 Infiniti driven by 82-year-old Richard Rutherford also of Charles City. Rutherford’s vehicle was stopped at a stop sign, waiting for Heim to complete her turn.

Police reported no injuries in the accident, however, the accident resulted in property damage to both vehicles. The Chevrolet Suburban driven by Heim sustained an estimated $2,500 in damages, while the Infiniti driven by Rutherford had an estimated $1,500 in damages.

Both drivers were issued citations following the investigation. Kierstine Heim was cited for failure to maintain control, a simple misdemeanor, as she was determined to be at fault for striking Rutherford’s stopped vehicle. Richard Rutherford was also cited for a simple misdemeanor, having an expired driver’s license.
