Hampton golf cart driver killed crossing Highway 65, struck by motorcyclist

HAMPTON - A fatal collision occurred Sunday afternoon just north of Hampton when a golf cart driver crossed Highway 65 and into the path of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider.

HAMPTON – A fatal collision occurred Sunday afternoon just north of Hampton when a golf cart driver crossed Highway 65 and into the path of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred on Sunday, October 1, 2023. At 3:20 PM that day, a 2007 Columbia golf cart was stopped at Highway 65 and 170th Street, just north of Hampton, when the driver, 84-year-old Robert Norman Irwin of Hampton, failed to yield the right-of-way and began crossing Highway 65 east to west. The golf cart entered the path of a 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 54-year-old Corey William Spear of Hampton, causing a crash.

As a result of the collision, Irwin was killed. Spear was hurt and taken by ambulance to Franklin General Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
