Veteran’s plaque rededication set for Saturday, July 2nd

Mason City Veterans Memorial Association will be rededicating a plaque “in honor of their heroic dead” on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at 10:00 AM on the veterans ground inside the Federal Avenue entrance to Elmwood-St. Joseph Municipal Cemetery. The plaque, first set on May 30, 1922, was used to dedicate a flagpole installed at the original entrance to the cemetery on 10th Street SW. For a number of years the Cemetery Board has wanted to restore the plaque and relocate it to a more prominent place by the new flagpole.

Life Scout John Enright, from Boy Scout Troop 401, coordinated the refurbishing of the plaque, raised funds for the new granite mounting stone, and helped with the foundation and setting of the stone as his Eagle Scout project.

The program will include the unveiling and dedication by Doug Bailey, Chairman of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association, a military by the VFW Honor Guard and a presentation of the Eagle Scout project and recognition of contributors by John Enright. The public is invited to attend.

Generous contributions for the project were given by American Legion Clausen-Ward Post Number 101, Carlene Davis, Diamond Vogel Paint, Disabled American Veterans Verdun-Pearl Harbor, Elmwood-St. Joseph Municipal Cemetery, H & S Powder Coating, Kevin Jacobson, a memorial to Jim Kantaris, Luke’s Central Machine, Midas Auto Service, Pat Moretz, Overhead Door of Mason City, Star Auto Body, Inc., Dean and Merle Statzer, Veterans Memorial Association and VFW Post 733. The project was coordinated through Mason City Volunteer Program Coordinator Mary Zishka, Cemetery Manager Randy Opheim, Jim Kantaris and Chuck Harris from the VFW and Jack Leaman.|
