VICTOR, Iowa — A 14-year-old boy was killed and his father was injured Wednesday after a semi-truck and an Iowa Interstate Railroad train collided at a rural crossing, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
The fatal crash happened at about 12:35 p.m. on June 3, 2026, at Highway 21 and Old 6 Road in Poweshiek County, near Victor.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2015 Kenworth semi driven by 38-year-old Michael Orton of Palmyra, Missouri, was southbound on Highway 21 when the truck failed to yield at the railroad crossing and was struck by a westbound Iowa Interstate train.
A passenger in the semi, 14-year-old Robert Orton, identified in the report as the driver’s son, died at the scene. His body was taken to the State Medical Examiner.
Michael Orton was injured and transported by AirCare to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The State Patrol report says the train’s conductor and engineer were also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The crash caused a major derailment, with authorities reporting two power engines and 17 train cars off the tracks, along with significant damage to the rail line. No hazardous materials were involved, according to officials.
The truck was listed as being associated with Sydenstricker Nobbe of Mexico, Missouri. The vehicle was towed by BJS Towing.
The Iowa State Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
