December 26, 1954 – July 16, 2025
Eddy Lee Shackleton, 70, of Mason City, and formerly of Manly, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services will be held at this time.
Ed was born on December 26, 1954, in Missouri, to Clyde and Ella (Mathis) Shackleton. He was raised in Manly and graduated from North Central High School with the class of 1973. He later attended North Iowa Area Community College, always valuing education and remaining close to his roots.
A man of steady work ethic and quiet determination, Ed never shied away from a hard day’s work. He built his career with dedication and reliability, holding positions at Pepsi, Curries, and eventually Cargill Kitchen Solutions in Mason City, where he retired. Wherever he worked, Ed’s easygoing nature and good humor made him well-liked and respected by those around him.
It was during his school years that Ed met the love of his life, Michele “Shelly” Hedegard. Their bond was instant and unwavering. On December 30, 1999, they were united in marriage, beginning a journey filled with laughter, strength, and deep devotion. Ed was a loving husband, a proud father, and a deeply cherished “Papa” to his grandchildren. His family was his world, and he was theirs.
Ed was happiest close to home. He found peace in the outdoors, especially at local hunting and fishing spots, where he enjoyed nature’s quiet comforts. At home, he loved playing cards with his family—Yahtzee, Tripoli, or any game that brought everyone together. These gatherings, often full of laughter and light-hearted teasing, were some of his favorite times.
A lifelong fan of the San Francisco 49ers, Ed rarely missed a game and cheered with true heart. But beyond hobbies and routines, it was Ed’s kind spirit and joyful soul that left a lasting mark. He had a heart big enough for everyone, a quick wit, and a warmth that made people feel instantly at ease.
To his grandchildren, he was simply “Papa”—a title he wore with pride and joy. His strength, humor, and gentle presence will live on in their memories, forever woven into the fabric of the family he loved so deeply.
Left to honor and cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Shelly Shackleton; his children: Ryan (Dawn), Jason (Jenn), Alan (Sarah), Kelly, Josh (Kylie), and Jessy (Kalyn) Shackleton; 17 adored grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda Tedder and Brenda (John) Crom; his brothers, Nick (Janet), Gary (Cindy), and Danny Paul (Tracy) Shackleton; sisters-in-law, Teresa Compton, Jenna (Jason) Price and Holly Hedegard; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Ella Shackleton; his brother, Randy Shackleton; his father-in-law, Rodney Hedegard, and his brother-in-law, Michael Hedegard.
