The Iowa Senate has 50 members and is controlled 34-16 in favor of Republicans. The Iowa House has 100 members and is controlled 64-36 in favor of Republicans. Bills are introduced in either chamber, typically in a committee, then passed on to the Senator or House for consideration. If the bill passes, the other chamber must consider the bill, sometimes leading to compromises or changes before a final vote. If the bill ultimately passes the House and Senate, Republican Governor Kim Reynolds may then sign it into law.

Republicans will be looking to cut taxes as the legislative session moves forward over the next several weeks. Likely, social issues will be at the top of their agenda, as they firmly control most of what will take place in the Capitol. Democrats are relegated to playing defense and criticizing the Republicans on a range of issues, including gun control, abortion, filthy Iowa air and water, and Kim Reynold’s telling Iowans that kids are too fat and do not need free summer meals.
Meanwhile at the Capitol on Monday, a school walkout in Iowa is planned, with a gun violence protest at the Capitol grounds in the afternoon. On Monday morning, March for Our Lives Iowa will be holding walkouts at schools across the state with a protest at the Capitol at 1 PM to follow, demanding gun control reform.
