OBIT: Walter Henry Bierbaum

Walter Henry Bierbaum, 89, of Clear Lake, IA passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa. Throughout his career, he worked for Builders Supply, Diamond Vogel Paints, Ace Hardware, and Diamond Joe’s Casino, where he was still employed at the time of his death.

Walter Henry Bierbaum, 89, of Clear Lake, IA passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Ave N, Clear Lake, Iowa. Family will have a Private Graveside Service at a later time.

Walter was born on February 23, 1934, son of Leander and Irene (Hoffman) Bierbaum of Cowell, Iowa. After graduating high school he moved to Mason City to attend Hamilton Business School, launched his family life with Barbara Gahn (Peterson)and his professional work life. Throughout his career, he worked for Builders Supply, Diamond Vogel Paints, Ace Hardware, and Diamond Joe’s Casino, where he was still employed at the time of his death. Clearly he enjoyed working and interacting with the people he met on the job.

He was proud of being from Iowa, his rural roots, and work ethic. He enjoyed old cars, and old farm equipment. Spending his whole life in northern Iowa afforded him a long life of being around what he loved and enjoyed. Walter liked riding his bike finishing crossword puzzles and often would spend time at the Clear Lake Library. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Walter loved his family and being able to take them on family fishing trips to Minnesota. It was important for him to take a yearly vacation with everyone. He will be missed dearly.

Those left to cherish memories of Walter are his children, Doug (Anne) Gahn of Lawrence, KS, Richard (Tammy) Gahn of Clear Lake, IA, Scott Gahn of Mason City, IA, Todd (Tina) Bierbaum of Loveland, CO, and Babette (Dave) Engebretson of Clear Lake, IA; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Mary Hanson of Vermillion, SD; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Irene Bierbaum, as well as his brother, Richard Bierbaum.
