Women’s College Basketball: Iowa State downs Oklahoma, 63-59

AMES – Iowa State (14-8, 6-5 Big 12) held on to defeat Oklahoma (12-11, 5-6 Big 12), 63-59 Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones saw a 15-point second-half lead evaporate, but were able to make key plays down the stretch. Up 44-29 in the early part of the second quarter, the Sooners were able to fight back and go ahead 59-55 with under five minutes left.

However, it was all ISU the rest of the way. Freshman Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw hit a 3-pointer and Joens scored five points, as the Cyclones kept OU from scoring in the final four and half minutes to come out on top.

Joens played a big part in the victory, scoring 17 points and grabbing 15 rebounds en route to her 12th double-double of the season. Kristin Scott also had a double-double, her fourth this year, with 18 points and 12 boards. She also had three blocks, including two in the final minute to stop the Sooner comeback attempt.

The first quarter was a low-shooting affair, but the Cyclones led 16-12. Joens, Rae Johnson and Scott did all the scoring for ISU, led by Joens‘ six points.

OU took a brief lead (17-16) at the beginning of the second quarter behind an 8-0 run, but Joens answered with a score in the paint followed by a 3-pointer from Scott to move the Cyclones back into the lead at 21-17.

The Cyclones closed the second quarter strong thanks to Camber. The senior scored 11 points in the final five minutes behind a trio of 3-pointers, including a desperation trey that banked in at the buzzer to give the Cyclones a 38-27 advantage at the break.

The Sooners were able to trim the Cyclone lead to 48-43 after three periods. ISU was up 44-29 in the period, but OU closed the quarter with an 8-2 run.

Madi Williams opened the fourth quarter with three-straight baskets, and suddenly OU had erased a 15-point second half deficit. Joens finally ended a near 10-minute field-goal drought for the Cyclones and then Johnson hit a big 3-pointer. The two baskets got the Cyclones back on top at 53-49 with 6:57 left in the game.

OU continued to counter, going on a 10-2 run to forge 59-55 lead. Espenmiller-McGraw buried a huge corner trey before Joensscored in the post to erase the OU advantage at 60-59 with 3:30 remaining in the game.

Both teams were scoreless for the next three minutes until Joens hit one of two free-throw attempts, as the Cyclones held a slim 61-59 lead with :37 seconds left.

OU attempted to tie the game, but Scott blocked Mandy Simpson’s shot with under 15 seconds left. Joens then iced the game with a pair of free-throws.

Players of Note
Adriana Camber was impressive on offense and defense in the Cyclone victory. Camber tallied 12 points, including 11 in the final five minutes of the first half to break open a close game. She also did a fantastic job hounding OU’s top scorer Taylor Robertson, limiting her to just 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Robertson was averaging over 20 points and five 3-pointers per game heading into the contest.

Ashley Joens picked up her 12th double-double of the season with 17 points and 15 boards. Joens had eight caroms in the first half to record her 12th double-digit rebounding effort of the season. Joens is averaging 14.5 rebounds in her last two games.
