WAVERLY – A person was trapped under a bridge in Waverly Sunday night, and emergency responders rescued him before he was helicoptered to a hospital.
The Waverly Police Department reports that on September 7, 2023 at approximately 9:27 PM, they responded to a concerned citizen who was walking on the Bremer Avenue bridge. The pedestrian stated they heard a voice yelling for help from below the bridge. The pedestrian and Waverly officers were unable to visually see the individual.
The Waverly Fire Department and Paramedics from the Waverly Health Service arrived on the scene. Traffic was temporarily closed on the Bremer Avenue bridge by the Waverly Police Department to assist with recovery efforts. Emergency responders entered the river and were able to locate a younger male asking for help. The individual was responsive to emergency personnel, but due to his current medical condition, a basket was used to raise him from the river to bridge platform.
The Waverly Police Department requested the assistance of AirCare and upon their arrival, used the Bremer Avenue Bridge as a landing spot. The individual was transported to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City by AirCare.
The Waverly Police Department was assisted by the Waverly Fire Department, Waverly Health Services Ambulance, Bremer County Sheriff’s Office, and AirCare.
